Who is the best ODI player of all time?

Out of Tendulkar, Gilchrist, Murali or McGrath for me.

Don't see how you can sensibly split them if the measure is 'contribution to team success'.

Has a very good shout because he's specialized more than one field. Murali and McGrath never went on to explore other aspects of the game like Batting or captaincy.

If you make a big enough contribution in your chosen specialist field, the fact you only made small, or no, contribution in any other field doesn't matter. Surprised you're not keener on the idea of Murali being the best ODI player of all time - I think he's definitely in there.

If we're factoring in multi-disciplinary ideas, Ponting should be included by virtue of his batting, fielding and captaincy. No-one has captained more ODI wins than him - 157. Allan Border is the next most successful with 107, then Cronje with 99.

Definietly, he has a big shout at it. Would have been the best if he was a decent enough bowler. But in my book greatest ODI player should be contributor in every aspect of the game, if not the most.

If Jayasuriya didn't play as many games as he has then would everyone still consider him one of the best ODI cricketers of alltime? Because longetivity shouldn't automatically equal greatness. There have been many allrounders that haven't played anywhere near as many games that have been better then Jayasuriya. Couldn't see him playing as many ODI's as he has if he was from any country barring maybe England or New Zealand out of the stronger sides in International cricket.
I am sure there is a 200 match period somewhere in his career where he averages in the high 30s and that is not even to mention his bowling.12000 runs,373 wickets,MoS in 1996 world cup...all time ODI great for sure

Actually when given a little thought Xuhaib has a point. H may not be considered a great now, but very close to it. He's easily my pick to be the among the 5 greatest ODI batsmen, acceptable wicket keeper, good captain and exemplary in the conduct. So he has all the ingredients to be best ever ODI player.
yup this.
