Interesting thread... does a player merit inclusion if he performs above his career record against country XYZ (e.g. Laxman vs. Australia)?

Ambrose and Hammond and Laxman the Lizard deserve a place in the discussion.
Maybe Ambrose replacing Procter otherwise all the solid performers are there.

Sure can, personally I used a qualifier of 5+ matches but each to their own. Did consider Laxman, but Tendulkar, Lara & G. Pollock were marginally better to make up the middle order IMO

Seriously considered both Ambrose & Marshall as well, but Procter was remarkably successful against Oz in '69/70 & 41 wickets in 7 tests just can't be ignored.

Kevin Pietersen has to be in there. Only batsman to average 50+ at home and away against McGrath and Warne. Laxman should also be in there.

Fair enough, both Pietersen & Laxman have definitely enjoyed success against Aust, but from the team I listed, which 2 batsmen would have them replace?

Lara and Tendulkar. Neither of them were able to handle McGrath in the same vain that Laxman and Pietersen did.

On placid Indian pitches, like you said in the other thread.

    Many even can't do that.

How's this for a side in games vs England?

Bob Simpson - 1244 runs at 62.20 (as an opener)
Bruce Mitchell - 1918 runs at 66.13 (as an opener)
Sir Donald Bradman - 5028 runs at 89.78
Sir Viv Richards - 2869 runs at 62.36
Sir Garfield Sobers - 3214 runs at 60.64 and 102 wickets at 32.57
    Steve Waugh - 3200 runs at 58.18
    Adam Gilchrist + - 1083 runs at 45.12
    Shane Warne - 195 wickets at 23.25
    Dennis Lillee - 167 runs at 21.00
    Curtley Ambrose - 164 wickets at 18.79
    Joel Garner - 92 wickets at 17.93

    Pretty handy side that.

    Awesome side

Also illustrates how well Garner performed against both Australia & England

Kallis has the best record out of all batsmen against Mcgrath/Warne in Australia.

Same placid pitches where Ponting averages 20.

McGrath worthy of a place against England, especially if they were playing at Lords. His destruction of England was always so much more soul destroying than when Warne do it although I could not help but partially enjoy watching him on the first day in 2005.

Murali would be an automatic pick if it was not for Warne as well, good case for playing both of them.
