Great point. Some great sides here, and I like the idea of this thread. Though looking at some of these teams shows us that comparing records against certain teams across eras is IMO considerably more fraught with inconsistencies than simply comparing individual players. The above v WI example is a case in point - succeeding against the West Indies in the '70s/'80s and succeeding against them in the 2000s are two very different things.

This is unnecessary and agains the spirit of discussion on this forum, and the thread. Sean raises very valid points and you don't need to attack his suggestion in this manner.strong reading comprehension failure.
OP asked about players that succeeded against a particular team. Then you had to argue hypothetical scenarios. You know you have N0 argument when you base your whole point on hypothetical.
These players HAVE good records against the WI.FACT.
That is what the OP wanted.
Lol at you failing to understand the OP.

Though in the mid-late 1980s, England and Australia were nowhere near the Windies, and may have dropped below Pakistan and new Zealand too.Awesome side
Also illustrates how well Garner performed against both Australia & England
Yeah, you could say the same for any side. It's what makes this such a subjective exercise. I must admit I made quick decisions based on who I like. Ponting, Jayawardne and Flower were up against a massively better side than Sydney Barnes and Victor Trumper.Picking all time XI against SA etc is tricky IMO, because many of the players pounded them for fun when they were minnows. Like say, the team Ricky played against is in now way comparable to the one Jack hobbs played. Dunno if it matters, though. You could say the same with WI too.
Some of the South African teams in the early 20th century were surprisingly good with some quality wrist spinners in particular. IIRC Hobb's first series against them was won by South Africa on the back of a brilliant all-round performance by Aubrey Faulkner.Picking all time XI against SA etc is tricky IMO, because many of the players pounded them for fun when they were minnows. Outstanding side !Team vs. South Africa
1. Jack Hobbs - 1562 runs at 60.07
2. Victor Trumper - 900 runs at 75.00
3. Ricky Ponting - 2030 runs at 56.38
4. Wally Hammond - 2188 runs at 62.51, 34w at 30.61
5. Neil Harvey (c) - 1625 runs at 81.25
6. Mahela Jayawardne - 1472 runs at 70.09
7. Andy Flower (wk) - 566 runs at 70.75
8. Brian Statham - 69w at 20.66
9. Clarrie Grimmet - 77w at 15.57
10. Courtney Walsh - 51w at 19.80
11. Sydney Barnes - 83w at 9.85
(Yeah, you could have Bradman over Ricky with an average of something ridiculous, but that's less interesting.)
What does that have to do with Garners performances.Though in the mid-late 1980s, England and Australia were nowhere near the Windies, and may have dropped below Pakistan and new Zealand too.
Border should be in that side.vs Western Indians

You've got to take into consideration that SA weren't up in his days.Sydney Barnes against SA. What a record!
Well, didn't SA win a couple of series against Eng in a decade around that epic Barnes series? You've got to take into consideration that SA weren't up in his days.
Still amazing, mind.
