New IPL teams announced : Pune & Kochi

Flash news on TV:

Pune team bid for $370 Mil by Sahara group.

Kochi team bid for $333 Mil by "Rendezvous Sports" (A consortium consisting of unheard of companies)

Ridiculous numbers those. Given they'll "retain" these teams only for 7 years.

The valuations have gone literally out of roof... I have no idea what the business propositions are there. It's been even on a liberal analysis quite unbelievable.

I am not sure even about the Kochi team having home games for atleast one season. Apparently they haven't even procured land to construct the stadium

The more I hear about the Kochi bidders the more am suspicious of their motives.

It's all a big mist out there. Sreesanth will move to Kerala team (being the only notable Kerala cricketer ever) and perhaps even captain it

Apparently everything will be cleared up only during September bidding. Nothing has been decided on how many players existing franchises can retain (to preserve their core players). It makes it all the more bizzare because the new teams will have to shell out at a premium to get such players who apparently form part of core group of other teams.

From where are these people supposed to recoup the costs?

And if i am not wrong these are 10 year rights not lifetime asset ownership.370 and 333 million dollars over 10 years seems insane.

For this kind of money u could buy atleast 65% of the EPL Clubs with lifetime ownership and all assets attached(stadium and other properties etc..).
Hell Portsomuth could be bought for less than 10th of this.

Cevno, it's not 10 years, but 7 years (already 3 seasons are done). It is just money porn.

Fantastic sums of money there. I suppose they'll start in IPL 4.

I assume that Sahara has simply run the numbers based upon the relative cost of gaining seven years worth of exposure for its brand by this means as opposed to direct advertising

Just going to stretch the Indian talent even thinner, tbh.

When the IPL Franchises file for bankruptcy, it will make for a great documentary

Bad move. Already, I am beginning to lose interest in IPL 2010. Can't imagine how boring IPL 2011 with 94 matches will be.

^ Question is, is the IPL ultimately targeted at you? If not, well...

Yeah definitely true. Long term though, just more exposure for Indian talent to some top cricketers.

I guess Sahara can get more exposure worldwide by other means too,for so much money. So i don't think exposure explains that kind of money fully

And if exposure was the only reason, how in hell does that explain the rendevouz sports ltd paying so much for the Kochi team?
What will they get exposure for?

I can only assume that the devious Modi timed his announcement of a second IPL in the year to jack up the bid amounts. Unlike last time, I think he's actually serious about it now. Doesn't bode well.

Have to say the gujrati's will be pretty unhappy with this. Ahemdabad was considered the most wanted city in the bidding ,but it did not turn out that way.

They did not get selected surprisingly when somehow due to shashi tharoor's efforts Kochi did.

Btw,Sahara is saying their emotional choice was Kanpur ,and they chose pune ahead of it and ahmedabad, because the logistics in pune,in terms of govt cooperation, infrastructure and the stadium were way better and the potential market was equal to kanpur ,if not better.
The stadium which is being contructed in pune is considered to be one of the very best in the world. On top of that they also have Ambi valley a few miles away from pune ,which they can utilise and promote along with their team. They also have their airport coming up in Pune.

I think Pune team now owned by Sahara will most likely have Amitabh Bachchan as their Ambassador.
