How much do you think this book is worth...?

I've been offered a copy of the book Cricket and All That signed by Dennis Compton and Bill Edrich (s.p) for £25. Do you think it is worth it? How much do you think it's worth? And do you think I would be able to make a profit from it? Any answers help is appreciated.

Tough question. If you are looking to make a profit then you need to know a lot about the book including condition, edition etc. Even then Id say not to bother.

If you are looking for something that you with both read and treasure then I would say buy it.

IMHO, buy it if you will read it and feel a sense of pride and excitement for owning something signed by two England greats. Also try offering him 20 quid. Worth a try.

You love cricket mate, so you won't end up selling it imo. I'd buy it, keep it and cherish it if I were you.

Don't buy a book to make profit. Buy it if you are going to read it next. Next is important as otherwise you tend to pile loads of books and not read many.

If its the edition published by Readers Union then I doubt its worth any more than £25 if that - if its a true first edition (I can't remember the original publisher off hand but there were only the two editions) and is in top order then it may be worth a little more than £25 but bear in mind the following

i) condition is vital with books - is the dust jacket present and unclipped and "as new" - are there any gift inscriptions

ii) forged signatures abound in the memorabilia market

iii) just because a specialist dealer would want a particular figure doesn't mean thats what you'd get on ebay where prices are a bit flat at the moment

After having a good look at the signatures, it appeared that they were forged, so I decided against it, but ended up buying the 1957 Wisden. Thank you to everyone who gave their advice :) .

A wise decision if in doubt about the sigs - Cricket and All That is not one of cricket literature's highpoints anyway

1957 was a fine year for Wisden - reflections on the Red Rose county finishing runners up and on an Ashes series where the Oz were comprehensively Lakered :)

On this subject - where does one go about acquiring copies of 1950s and 1960s Wisdens? I have a full set dating back to 1990 and obtaining those from the 1980s and 1970s appears a task that is not unduly taxing. And I'm informed that once you start getting back into the '40s and before it's sufficiently pricey that I'll want to be a fully-fledged legal official before I even give it thought. So it's those couple of decades that I'm presently most interested in.

Try, from Pratters link, Ken Faulkner - he's a good friend of mine and a very fair man - or if you like eBay there are bargains to be had there - a lot depends whether you just want copies to read or if you're fussy about condition - there is a huge premium for condition on Wisdens - catch me on MSN if you need any help

I have ordered a pile of books from William Roberts and he excellent in service. His books were in prime quality and there were a fair few old ones I had ordered.
