if Australia had wanted to respond in kind then they could have done, somewhat uncharacteristically they elected instead to put being able to claim the moral high ground ahead of fighting fire with fire.

I know some Australians get all holier than thou about their refusal to lower themselves to retaliate but that really is utter b******* - they picked Harry "Bull" Alexander for the final Test, whose words are roughly paraphrased in my earlier post, just to bowl short stuff at England - it's seldom mentioned 'cos he wasn't very good and wasn't very successful but it happened
