    Wildcard

Ok.. I am gonna post here my all time ODI XI... You guys have to make ONE change... Not one change to the team above you, but one change to my team here and post it. And we will compare how much of a difference the one player makes between the two sides.

    Sachin Tendulkar
    Brian Lara
    Viv Richards
    Ricky Ponting
    Michael Bevan
    M.S. Dhoni (wk)
    Imran Khan (c)
    Shaun Pollock
    Wasim Akram
    Shane Warne
    Muttiah Muralitharan.

I have refrained from pick some of the all time great PURE fast bowlers and have rather gone for the guys who can also bat.. Imran and Wasim will be my strike bowlers with Shaun Pollock providing the economy and support. And the usual middle overs singles won't be that easy to take with an attacking captain like Imran and attacking spinners like Murali and Warne. And there is always Richards, Sachin, Bevan to bowl few overs in the extremely rare case that one or two of the main guys have an off day.

The batting looks after itself with 4 of the all time greats (IMO among the top 15 of all time in all forms of cricket) in the top 4 to be followed by two of the best ODI batsmen, esp. for the middle and slog overs situation. And the hitting will be taken care by Pollock, Wasim, Warne and Imran himself, should the situation arise. These 3 can also do a rearguard in case of an unlikely collapse of the top 6.
We miss you, Fardin. :(. RIP.

so far the guys replaced have been:

    MS Dhoni - 2
    Lara - 1
    Pollock - 1

Interesting.. I do like the idea of having Gilchrist open but with the 4 all time greats in my top 4, I am more inclined to the idea of replacing Pollock with an out and out seamer.. Lee may not be the one, but maybe Malcolm Marshall would come in?

The reason for Brett Lee above Malcolm Marshall is his strike rate (29.2 vs 45.7). Brett Lee has one of the best strike rates ever, and when you add in his late order hitting and his excellent outfielding he's a very attractive person to have in a 'best ever' team.

Obviously I'm going for the oft-disputed 'taking wickets is crucial in ODIs', but here are the strike rates of the original attack:

    Kahn 40.9
    Pollock 39.9
    Akram 36.2
    Warne 36.3
    Murali 35.1

this is an excellent team. would have been my choice really. but since it is already made i would post this as my (second) choice:

    Sachin Tendulkar
    Sanath Jayasuriya
    Brian Lara
    Viv Richards
    Ricky Ponting
    Michael Bevan
    M.S. Dhoni (wk)
    Imran Khan (c)
    Shaun Pollock
    Wasim Akram
    Muttiah Muralitharan.

imran, akram, pollock and murali would be my primary bowlers. out of the other 10 overs, sanath would have to bowl at least 6. viv, sachin and ,may be even, bevan can bowl the remaining 4. it probably weakens the 5th bowling option but the batting lineup is scarier to look at. anyone of the top 7 could win the match on his own. and 8,9 and 10 are not going to be push overs by any standards either.

If a better economy is what you want, Hadlee should play ahead of Pollock, imo. His batting is about as useful as Pollock's too.

Pollock has a better ER than Hadlee compared to the ER of the eras that they played.

The change was easy to make not because I did not think some others could be replaced but because Playing with just one opener makes no sense. None of the other batsmen have shown any interest in opening the innings in their careers.

So if an opener had to be brought in without making the batting less imposing it had to be at the expense of Dhoni.

Gilchrist also happens to be the better keeper which is a bonus and not the basic reason for making the change.
