It was a flat pitch but probably not as flat as the last one obviously..... Batting was good and 3 spinners bowling on the opening day made it seem worse.

Well Mahela Jayawardene was also given a life first ball he faced. And just now, another one.

I agree with you R_D. I think many people just read the scorecard and decided, "Well, top 3 hundreds! RR of 4.5! Murali going at 5 per over!" and jumped to concluding that it is a flat bed. The truth is that Sri Lanka missed a trick by going in with 3 finger spinners and just one fast bowler. Chanaka Welegedara bowled superbly in the first test first morning but it is asking too much of him to be the only genuine pace bowler in the side. I think perhaps SL underestimated Indian batsmen and forgot that they are master players to realise from their earlier mistakes and adapt quickly. The third spinner Mendis was reduced to play bowling out the overs and it did not help Murali had an offday.

Fact is SL fast bowlers sucked and when Sehwag got going they lost all the confidence.

India is just better team right now.

Take a look at the variations in Australia's pitches, although admittedly not perfect, give you a bit of encouragement if you want to be a paceman, a spinner, or a specialist bat, one reason for their past dominance both home and away I feel..

Fair enough to India for a cracking performance, but its not nice viewing
Langeveldt, India has worked up even better scores overseas in the last decade (Sydney 04 comes to mind). Australian pitches are among the most homogenous pitches in the world now and the terrible paucity of spinners there is quite enough indicator of how spin bowling has been decimated by un assisting pitches there.

It was risky tactic and gambling on winning the toss and batting first.. would've been Sanga's ideal scenario.

Yes R_D, I think that was what Sangakkara might have been thinking. However there is no doubt he thought 3 spinners would/could rout out this Indian batting lineup twice on such a track. Perhaps he just misread the pitch and thought this would be another flat deck with some assistance for spinners towards the last few days of the test match. In any case it backfired and now Sri Lanka has to battle it out to draw this.

    Haha.

Anyways, until we get Mahela out I'm not too comfortable here. Can't let a big partnership develop here.
