Morton has always looke techincally poor in the test he ahs played though. Dowlin has fairly competent, so i reckon he deserved his chance.

Benn is not the greatest, but i doubt Mohamamed would trouble AUS. Jaggernauth is the best spinner in WI from what i've seen.

If Edwards ws fit, i still would have picked Tongue TBH. Simmons should have been picked instead of Sammy who really not be near to the test squad.

It's not often I say this about our West Indies selectors, but I think they did a decent job this time around....

That said, I have a few minor grievances.

1) Their loyalty to Benn is mind-boggling. Bring in Nikita Miller of Amit Jaggernauth for him for the Test team.

2) Dowlin should not be in the squad ahead of Simmons.

3) Sammy is not going to be a success in Tests in Australia. Rather, he should be in the ODI squad. Maybe Richardson or a second spinner would've been my choice....

But it's good to see Roach, Tonge, Deonarine and Barath in the squad....

Both deserved to be picked. If the selectors want to give talented young Barath the chance to open, just in case he fails - Simmons should be in the squad as back-up.

Ewww gross.
I've seen quite a number of people type Tongue instead, even Richard

It would be foolhardy to omit Edwards if he is fit....

Sure, he might struggle to get into an Aussie team, but right now he's arguably the best WI pacer around, a title he occasionally shares with Taylor. It would be very silly to drop him, and replace him with Tonge, on the basis of just a couple of home Tests against Bangladesh, both of which the WI lost.

But the fact is that he's unfit, and the WIndies will have to make do without him....

As for Dowlin, seriously, what has he done to merit selection ahead of Simmons? I'd love to know....

It's a shame Fidel has not managed to regain his fitness ahead of this Australia tour, his pace and fire would certainly have caused one or two problems for the Aussie batsmen, if not consistently, then I'm sure he'd have delivered a few tasty spells.

I'm surprised Lendl Simmons has been thrown aside already, he showed enough promise against England to suggest he should be persevered with, but apparently not.

Are there any spinners mentioned in this thread that are seriously good enough to trouble the Australia side ? The likes of Ponting, Hussey, Clarke etc, do play spin very well and I would question that unless it is an absolute turner, is there is a necessity for a specialist spinner to be selected at all. By selecting an extra batsmen it gives the line-up a bit more depth, and the likes of Gayle, Nash (could have used Simmons or Hinds.R. also) etc could be used a little more as part-timers.

Well you kinda have to balance that against the fact that the most successful bowlers in the West Indies these days are almost invariably spinners. Gavin Tonge was actually the only quick in the top eleven wicket takers in the West Indies' FC cricket last season.

Even when WI have been doing badly they have had some quality players but they just can't seem to put it all together and do well consistently.

their bowlers still have the pace but lack the discipline.

Looking at the AUS team, presuming Clarke, Siddle & Lee will be fit - the team for the 1st test should surely be the same from the Oval test - only change should be Lee replacing Clark.
