Yes Voltman it's yet another NZ selection thread

As the away series against Pakistan starts in 3 weeks-ish and we've lost multiple players to injuries, I thought it would be interesting to see who people think should/ will be in the 15 man squad.

    Injured: Ryder, Elliott, Tuffey

    The definites:
    Vettori
    Bond
    Mills
    Butler
    McCullum
    Taylor
    Guptill
Franklin - surely they won't leave him out this time
Oram - assuming the reports are right and he's not retiring from ODIs.

Another spinner: N McCullum or Patel. Or maybe even both.

A backup wicketkeeper I guess: Please pick McGlashan and not Hopkins

Another fast bowler: O'Brien, Southee, Arnel

A couple more batsmen: I imagine they'll stick with Redmond at the top. Will Broom get even more rope? Styris? Someone else like How, Flynn, Fulton, Stewart?

Is this a test or one day series? Where is it being played? Sorry - out of the loop.

Will say that is a weak looking NZ side.

I read that yes, Elliott is definitely out.

However Oram and Vettori will have recovered from their injuries apparently.

Also, the series is 3 one-dayers and 2 T20s and is being played in the UAE starting early November. Only interested in the squad for ODIs though tbh.

I read that he was out for 2-3 weeks? Meaning Elliott may be back.
    Vettori will have recoved.
    So should Ryder.
    Oram has given it up.

    Wicketkeeper

    Brendan McCullum

    Bowlers

    Kyle Mills
    Daniel Vettori (Jeetan Patel)
    Shane Bond
    Ian Butler
    Jacob Oram (James Franklin)
    Nathan McCullum
    Iain O'Brien

    Batsmen

    Jesse Ryder (Bradley Watling)
    Martin Guptill
    Ross Taylor
    Grant Elliott (Kane Williamson)
    Scott Styris
    Neil Broom
    Peter McGlashan (back up keeper)

Yes I realise there's a lot of alllrounders in those categories so I split them into batting/bowling allrounders. Just trying to keep a clear structure.

Players in brackets are on standby if a player can't make it.

Now I'm sure you'll all notice Kane Williamson's name there and yes it's questionable but hear me out:

Firstly, when I was thinking of players to put there the names I had were Redmond, Cumming, Marshall, Sinclair and Fulton. They're all iffy players for ODIs imo. Williamson is a number four/five batsman 9though there are rumours he will move up to three this season) and will in all likelyhood be at the 2011 world cup in the subcontinent. He'd be the last player in the team if there were injuries, so in all likelihood he wouldn't play anyway but if he was required I'd rather him in than someone that we can be 80% sure of will not do well (though thats harsh on Fulton, who was once in the top two of our ODI batsmen). It's really not ideal, trust me.

McGlashan should have been at the CT ahead of Hopkins. He is a finisher and more suited to the ODI format than Hopkins. Franklin, whilst his batting at the CT was good, is a poor ODI bowler, so he gets bracketed. I also believe Nathan McCullum would be more useful than Patel in ODIs.

I'd also be tempted to move McCullum back down the order though with McGlashan's selection thats not too much of a worry anymore but there's no guarantee the selectors will pick him at all. I'm fine with McCullum opening but if Oram and McGlashan are unavailable the potentially a Broom/Hopkins finishing duo is...not my cup of tea. McCullum would do a fine job down the order again, but I'm not fussed if he opens or not either way.

    First XI (everyone fit):

    McCullum
    Ryder
    Guptill
    Taylor
    Elliott
    Oram
    McGlashan
    Vettori
    Mills
    Butler
    Bond

Apart from Butler there's no hole in that bowling. The top five we know all about, Oram's batting is a worry and McGlashan is an unknown quanity, though he did well in his very few ODI opportunities.

    If we're injury struck, then:

    Watling
    McCullum
    Guptill
    Taylor
    Styris
    Broom/McGlashan
    Franklin
    N. McCullum
    Mills
    Butler
    Bond
    Proudly supporting Central Districts
    RIP Craig Walsh

Good post Flem. Williamson? Hmmmm. If he goes I think it would only be one of those 'get used to the team environment' types of selections like they did with Boult a while ago.

Also for those of you too lazy to look up news websites on the global interweb, here's where I got the info on who is playing and who is not:

    Elliott 95% not going

The story on Oram seems to be that he's still playing ODIs, and is going to be fit in time. So probably yes but not 100% sure.

From the same article above, Tuffey is out until the end of November, Vettori will be fit. For Ryder it says he's out for 'several weeks', but will miss the series.

My Squad assuming Ryder, Elliott and Tuffey are all out with injury

    Wicket Keepers

    Brendon McCullum
    Peter McGlashan

    Batsmen

    Martin Guptill
    Ross Taylor
    Bradley Watling
    Scott Styris
    Shannon Stewart
    Neil Broom

    Bowlers

    Shane Bond
    Ian Butler
    Kyle Mills
    Brent Arnel

    All Rounders

    Daniel Vettori
    Nathan McCullum
    James Franklin

On Kane Williamson, I hope our selectors don't pick him for this tour. This is shaping up to be a massive season for Williamson (he'll most likely get the number three spot) and the last thing we need to do is pick him before he's even played a game at his perfered spot.

My teams pretty standard, Watling should get a chance sooner or later as he was very good over the winter in Australia and India. Shannon Stewart might be a bit of a supirse but I think he would suit the power hitter role very well, he had a very good season last year doing this.

McGlashan in for Hopkins for obvious reasons, and McCullum in for Patel because he offers a lot more to the team.

The line-up I would like to see from my squad:

    1.Martin Guptill
    2.Bradley Watling
    3.Neil Broom/Scott Styris
    4.Ross Taylor
    5.Shannon Stewart
    6.Daniel Vettori (C)
    7.Brendon McCullum
    8.James Franklin
    9.Kyle Mills
    10.Ian Butler
    11.Shane Bond

How is Oram getting selected ahead of Franklin? Besides injury and giving up the goat for Tests he is in horrendous form and hasn't done anything in yonks. Franklin on the other hand has played his role perfectly well.

Depends if we want batting or bowling. Franklin is more in form with the bat atm (which is pretty sad for Oram considering Franklin hasn't had to do much in ODIs to prove that) but if we want bowling its Oram every time.

Looked up Stewart on cricinfo. Was impressed from what I heard on the radio last season but wanted to see an overall record, had an inkling it wasn't the flashest and was right. It's okay, but I dunno tbh. How many seasons has he been in hot form? He's been bumped around the order a lot which I doubt has helped. Wouldn't throw a hissyfit if he was included but wouldn't be surprised if he flopped. More info needed on him I think, which hopefuly the selectors have (we all know what they're like).

Not related to this at all and fairly insignificant but my search of Stewart on google threw this up which entertained me for five minutes. Cricinfo.com

Disagree, if conditions dictate swing Franklin is an infinitely better bowler. Plus this is the 5th bowling option we are talking about, it doesn't need to be that wonderful, the batting half of the equation is more important.

    IF conditions swing.

If they don't, he's pretty bad.

Games can be won and lost on fifth bowling options. After Mills, Bond and Vettori we have to see whether Butler has a good day and whether Jesse will do well as an economical part timer.

There's also the possibility of Oram finding his form with the bat again, and if he does its a no contest.

As much as I disagree with the original selection of Redmond, surely he has to be given some sort of extended run now he is already there and hasn't been too terrible in his couple of games.

How has How been of late? If you need a solid bat for the top order I wouldn't mind seeing him get another crack before potentially stalling the career of a promising youngster on the up. I also agree with the selections of Styris on here, much needed cog atm.

Presumably How is waiting for the domestic season to kick back in. I like him but the top three in the full strength side is probably in cement. Would have him ahead of Redmond though.

Redmond's done okay, but of the three forms ODs are his worst. Its quite wierd, he's good at 20/20 and okay at FC, but not very good at List A. He shouldn't have been at the CT imo, though iirc he was picked because he was playing in Aussie and had some game time under his belt which is fair enough.
