He is one of the better openers we have, inconsistent though.

Has done well aginst very good bowling attacks in Tests and has been pretty good in the limited overs format of the game, but as I said earlier not very consistent.
As Straw Man pointed out, he does have good ODI figures.
However, I've always figured that consistency is what makes a good batsman a good opener. Guys that either make 70-odd or get out in single figures, seems to be more suited for a #5 spot, I guess.

Hey I just noticed Broom is not playing and we appear to have gone in with 5 bowlers (Bond, Southee, Butler, N McCullum, Vettori), PLUS Oram (as a specialist bat??), plus Styris, plus Redmond. WTF?

I mean really... that's just asking for a batting collapse.

Vettori is a number 6 bat now. Franklin injured himself evidently which might explain Oram as a specialist. Oram at 7 and NcCullum at 8 is a very long tail in all honesty.

Southee is bowling really well here, he looks to have got his swing back. He's beaten the batsmen twice during this over with late swing.

dont think so..

N McCullum got the place instead of Broom as Vettori was suggesting since beginning that he would like to play 2 spinners on this pitch.. Good decision IMO

'Which New Zealander would qualify next as a specialist batsman? I couldn't tell... If there would be one, I'd get him in for Butler or Southee...

At least Southee has fixed up that one four ball per over crap he was dishing up before he was dropped, he's also bowling a lot closer to the stumps.

Well with Ryder and Elliott injured the cupboard is quite bare. Fulton, Broom and Watling seem to be the next closest specialists to the team. Vettori has also stepped up and said he is willing to bat number 6 in ODIs.

Bond to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, 137.3
Bond to Khalid Latif, no run, 143.1 kmph

Loving those speeds & accuracy from Bond
