Great player for NZ although has had his haters of late who will be happy to see his back, will Elliot be able to fill his shoes? OD probably but test im not sure. Who else do we have?

Really surprised to hear he's retiring from ODIs TBH, had heard suggestions of him giving-up Tests several times recently but hoped he'd still feel (and be!) up to ODIs. Obviously doesn't bother me whether he plays Twenty20 internationals or not.

Shame if he's played his last ODI, always felt he could've done better as a ODI bowler (especially - batsman to some extent as well) than he ended-up doing and have obviously continued to hope that it might happen someday.

Bloody good player in his prime. Real pity his injuries took their toll so much.

Now....James Franklin or Grant Elliott at six in tests...this will be interesting.

A real pity to see Big Jake/ the Goalkeeper go out in this way. He's certainly tested patience in recent times with injury and poor form and perhaps wasn't all that far away from being dropped. Personally was hoping for a triumphant return to fitness and form in the test matches against Pakistan where the conditions should have suited him (though if he'd failed I would have agreed that he should be dropped). He's only 31 iirc.

It's been a big decline for a guy who at one stage was close to NZ's best batsman. So in some ways I can't blame him for losing patience and calling quits.

Obituary: Will always remember that hundred against Australia with Chris Martin holding up the other end - that was awesome.

I still definitely think another batsman would be the best option at this stage with Ryder just bowling a little more than he does at the moment. Although if Franklin backed up his brilliant 2008/09 New Zealand domestic season and 2009 English domestic season efforts with the bat again, there'd probably be a decent case for him being the next 'batsman' in line anyway. It's just such a shame that he hasn't come back the same bowler after his injury.

Shame though, Oram was the best Kiwi to watch when he was playing well.

I really wish that guy would harden the **** up tbh. I know people will jump on my back but if I was him I would do anything to stay on the field, including chopping my own hand off

Can't believe it. Am pretty gutted really, thought he would have tried just being a limited overs specialist for a while. But he has said that he would rather be known for his test record, so I guess if he couldn't keep playing the form of the game that really meant something to him he wouldn't want to hang around playing ODI cricket either.

Yeah definitely fondly remember his 2 centuries in Australia. The test at the Gabba when I ran home from school to catch the end, and then the ODI century at Perth - where for a short time he had the fastest ODI century for NZ.

Good for New Zealand cricket IMO. Much like a few years ago when Bond was going down with injuries that would make James Hird say "toughen up", this at least gives New Zealand the chance to move on and allow guys to settle into the side instead of moving out every time Oram is half-fit.

Seems very young to give it away totally, but (like Flintoff) he's a naturally big guy and bowling quick seemed to be forever giving him niggles, which are only going to get worse as he ages, I suppose. Honest decision from the big fella.

Can see him being pushed the Styris way though and shown the door by the selectors, though Styris mainly suffered from Taylor and Elliott claiming the number four and five positions.
