What has happened to Sadagoppan Ramesh?

Had a look on his profile and it said he hasn't played FC cricket for over two years and List A for over one year and never played T20 (even with ICL). So has he retired or has form been so bad they haven't picked him?

Well he came in a couple of Tamil movies. Also hosted some TV shows. Poor guy did well in the chances he got but not lucky to have the selectors favour.

What do you mean out of favour with the selectors? Srikkanth is from the south.

Ramesh was an opener, do you think he is better than Gambhir or Sehwag?

He was shattered after what he received from Murali in the 2nd innigs of his last test. exact mirror image of the "Ball of the century"

Tamil Nadu has always been a state which has had harsh decisions taken against them selection wise. It was the same with Ramesh in his playing days. The guy who played Akram and Akhtar so well surely deserved more chances, considering India's plight of openers back then.

Last 2 years, he has gone for acting as I briefly read some where and some one has mentioned in this thread. His cricketing career by large is over.

Ramesh didn't do too well against the competition since he was axed- first it was Jaffer, then Gambhir, then Jadhav. Jaffer had a more substantial record at that time and then dominated the FC scene in the 2001-02 season. Then came Gautam Gambhir, who was scoring more than a few against international FC/reserve teams, making his case stronger. Likewise, Chopra, who did enough to get his national cap, but a very disappointing 04-05 season, where he was upstaged even by a relative newcomer like Dheeraj Jadhav, suggested his chances of a comeback were nearly over. Maybe he could have pounced on that chance when the Indians were needlessly opening with Dravid, then half-baked wicketkeepers, but he couldn't add much value (and his footwork and technique, even against spin, were questionable, and he was also a weak fielder) to his place in the team, and eventually, the competition got ahead of him.

Ramesh was opening for India in 1999. Gambhir came in only now. I obviously don't believe he is better than either, just that he was dropped unceremoniously after playing well against Akram, Akthar et all..

You are right. Indian selectors were grossly unfair to Ramesh. His run of scores (mostly between fifty and 90) was completely ignored and his lack of footwork was cited by everyone. The same is not used to drop so many other Indian batsmen who are "footwork-challenged" .

Whatever it takes!!!
He was pretty amazing as a close in fielder as well and had a really great series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka when so many other batsmen were struggling.. It was only him, Dravid and Ganguly who did well there and even Ganguly was not that consistent. Was hard done by indeed... I believe him and S Sriram were really hard done by during that period...

Ramesh was hideously unlucky, one always suspected that if he'd played for Mumbai he would have played a lot more. He was certainly better than some of the players who came after him.

Yeah his close in fielding was pretty good. The catch to get rid of Warne in that Bhajji hattrick was a great one.
