how did you come to that conclusion ikki? when did i say that?

okay let me start again if you need help

Imran's bowling A
Imran's batting B
Miller's bowling C
Miller's batting D

1) A>> (C=D) >B --------------------> so miller is a more well rounded all-rounder than imran
2) (A - C) >> (D - B) ---=------------> so imran is more useful as the fourth bowler in an all time XI
You said Imran has good batting and Miller has good bowling. The qualitative word being "good' and identical in both cases.

I agree with the above: Miller is more well-rounded and Imran would be a better fourth bowler. However, Miller would be a better fourth bowler and good bat.

Whatever it takes!!!
I don't think anyone is just talking about his batting. I think Kallis is a bit better bowler and then the difference is not that much.

Again, people tend to rate like this:

Sobers
-
-
-2nd guy

So if Kallis' record is that good, almost identical to Sobers', why is he not better than all the other all-rounders?
For me, he is just about the same as a bowler as Sobers.. Whatever more strike power Kallis brings is offset by the fact that Sobers' is so versatile. As a pure fast medium bowler, I am sure they have comparable records, with maybe Sobers even shading it.

Rate Sobers as a fielder more than Kallis too. Obviously I have never seen the great man in action live but I have seen Kallis and I Don't think he is special. Yes, he is good at second slip but so are so many others...

And I think Sobers is a MUCH better batsman than Kallis. So yes, there is a very big gulf between the two and I don't rate Kallis all that high as an allrounder at all because Sobers is well ahead of Kallis as a batsman, almost the same if not better as a bowler but easily much more versatile which is something I rate and he is easily the better fielder coz that is not quantifiable and you have to rely on what has been written and seen and told by people....

And I rate Miller second among the all time all rounders... Imran is a very close 3rd because I think his batting is only as good as Sobers' bowling... Perhaps bringing captaincy into the equation, it might change but right now, as "all rounders" I am just rating them on their batting and bowling plus their fielding.

Miller couldn't bowl off spin or leg spin either...
Haha, wickets don't count double if you take them using different bowling methods. Taking not-many wickets by bowling a mixture of off-spin, leg-spin and fast-medium, which is what Sobers did, is just as useless as taking not-many wickets bowling exclusively fast-medium.

useful or useless is not measured by wickets alone though... That is the point about cricket that people often fail to understand.. If you can do a job holding an end up, that is well and good... It is obvious you won't get too many wickets when you bowl pace in spin friendly conditions and vice versa.. esp. with a defensive field...

If you choose to bowl spin when the conditons favour pace and pace when conditions favour spin, you're an idiot, and deserve no kind of credit for it.

you are not an idiot for willingly providing variety to the attack so that specialists of the sort that is favoured by the pitch can be accomodated in the XI... Esp. when your stronger suite is batting...

Of all the apologetic reasons given for Sobers' dire bowling record, that is by far the worst.

Thanks for your input.

You might want to check out the thread where these points were made, not by me, but by men who actually saw the great man in action and had followed his career.

But then again, numbers are everything and what the men actually saw and reported are obviously false.. 8-)

There is pathetic and then a few levels down, there are your retorts.

Those saying that Sobers and Kallis are in the same class as all-rounders are looking purely at stats. Sobers is a good contender for the no.2 batsman of all-time, Kallis would be hard pressed to make the best 25 or even 30. Sobers was a much better field and slightly better bowler as well.

Having said that, I do feel that Kallis deserves to be ranked higher than he usually is. I may even consider him a potential to be in the top five all-rounders, and a lock for the top ten. Kallis is seriously underrated.

picked up shane warne's century at an airport book shop today. warne says kallis is not to be rated on par with ponting despite a comparable average because he would need 48 balls more than ponting to score a century. I say, similarly he would need 42 balls more than sobers to score a hundred. taking into consideration approximately the same number of balls played by his batting partner this would mean kallis would reach his century 14 overs after sobers if they started their innings together; that is he would score a hundred about an hour slower than gary. no wonder most cricket fans dont want to accord them same amount of respect.
