Underrated gems

bagapath

International Captain
kamran akmal's century against india when he came in at 39 for 6 is a very well remembered innings by most cricket fans in india/pak i think. azhar mahmood's 132 against SA even made it to the all-time top 10 knocks when wisden published its first such list in 2002. so i guess they dont qualify as underrated, though both are real gems.

one of my favorite allan border hundreds is this

2nd Test: Australia v India at Melbourne, Dec 26-30, 1985 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com

australia was staring at certain defeat. and the skipper stalled it single handed. he had only some bunnies for support. but when did it ever matter to "captain grumpy"?

umpires also screwed it up when it rained on the last day as india was crusing to the target. after the paly was called of well ahead of time, the rain stopped and the dry ground was bathed it warm sunlight. kapil dev pleaded with them to let india bat. but allan border had already ordered his team to head to the hotel and the game was over. must have been the closest india ever came to winning a series in australia.

Xuhaib

Azhar and Tendulkar's blietzgriek v RSA in 1997 (away). Was some of the best strokes on display you will ever see. True gems.
Still consider this best 2-3 hours of batting I have ever seen, Azhar was even better then Sachin in that knock.

Xuhaib

International Coach
Jaysuriay 240 against Pakistan in 2004 where he added 101 for the 10th wicket with Fernando with Fernando's contribution being 0.

Nishan

U19 Cricketer
Cant be botherd looking up the links, But Arjuna Ranatunga made 28 not out with boken thumb against pakistan in 2000, carrying SL to win by 2 wickets.

Lance Klusener 95? against SL in kandy in 2001.

Lillian Thomson

Hall of Fame Member
Dilley 56 and Old 29 at Headingley in 1981. Overshadowed by Botham's innings and Willis's bowling but both vital to the cause.

Klusener's riposte to that.102*coming in at number 9.violent little innings.india lost by a mountain.(see what I did there)
Cullinan's 122* in that same series, saving the match for SA.Klusener again coming in at 9,scoring 49.

'

Saeed Anwar's Kolkatta classic 188*.carry your bat innings.
'
Lara's 132 WACA 1997.
The last of the spiteful Perth pitches.Cracks all over and he played a true gem.
Oh wait this is an epic innings, doestnt belong here.

The Sean

Cricketer Of The Year
Ted Dexter's 70 off 73 balls against WI at Lord's in 1963. A brilliant display of strokeplay against Hall and Griffith that set England up for a win in a low scoring match.

Len Hutton's 37 out of 49 in Sydney on 1946 - a little gem of an innings that showed just how electrifying Hutton could be when he let himself go.

Beamer

International Vice-Captain
Ramnaresh Sarwan's 107 not out against South Africa on an extremely tricky surface at Port of Spain. Everyone remembers Lara's remarkable 196 in the 1st innings, but Sarwan's second innings effort was just as amazing. Scoring 107 out of a total of 194. Like most of Ronnie's centuries, it was extremely pleasing on the eye. He was batting on a completely different level to everyone else.

Gilly's 138* at the NCG vs SA 2002
following on from his Wanderer's double hundred.

Migara

Cricketer Of The Year
Minnows are not known to produce great bowlers.Neither SL managed to do it as minnows. But Ravi Rathnayake was a good seamer, very tall and moved the ball around. In this game, against Pakistan in Sialkot 1985, Rathnayake produced 24 overs of relentless torture against a formidable Pakistani side taking 8/83. Most of that 83 runs came through third man and off chinese cuts.

Ponting's 78 which just ended. Just bossed it on a seaming deck from ball one. Bowling not great but conditions tough.

Give it a chance to be rated IMO. If it turns out to be the innings that retains Australia the Ashes it'll go down with a fair bit of applause IMO.
