    New Zealand's Preliminary CT squad

Martin named in Champions Trophy probables | Cricket News | Global | Cricinfo.com
These giant 'preliminary' squads are pretty silly TBH.

But anyway, nice to see Stewart and Ingram are in the selectors thoughts.
God forbid Marshall being anywhere near the team

Bond and Tuffey make their return, and Marto sneaks back in with Arnel.

    Code:
    Batsmen:
    Jesse Ryder
    Martin Guptill
    Ross Taylor
    Neil Broom
    Aaron Redmond
    Craig Cumming
    Peter Fulton
    Jamie How
    Peter Ingram
    Shanan Stewart

    All-rounders:
    Grant Elliott
    Scott Styris
    Jacob Oram
    James Franklin

    Keepers:
    Brendon McCullum
    Peter McGlashan
    Gareth Hopkins

    Seamers:
    Kyle Mills
    Ian Butler
    Shane Bond
    Daryl Tuffey
    Iain O'Brien
    Tim Southee
    Chris Martin
    Brent Arnel

    Spinners:
    Daniel Vettori (capt)
    Nathan McCullum
    Jeetan Patel

    WTF:
    Brendon Diamanti
    James Marshall

So if James Marshall gets into the squad on account of his State Shield performances last season, why can't Skippy, who scored the most runs?
Favorite XI: WG Grace, VT Trumper, IVA Richards, DCS Compton, FMM Worrell (c), GS Sobers, AC Gilchrist (wk), H Larwood, SK Warne, T Richardson, SE Bond

Marshall will never make the final 15.

Because Sinclair is 33, and Marshall is 30. 3 years is quite a long time.

    Scott Styris

This is my first post - and some of my comments don't exclusively belong in this thread so go easy on me as I am a rookie.
    My comments

    1) I want to see Scott Stryis selected ahead of neil broom and grant elliot. Why? I think he is a better player or at least as good. And secondly I want to see consistency of selection he has been a solid performer for years and he has never let the country down - or at least not much. If players have served their country well we should be loyal to them and adopt a pick and stick policy. I think elliot should be our reserve player for when someone gets injured he is capable but except for his one century he is not a game winner. I would also like to see Styris be asked out of retirement from test cricket to address our woeful batting he has important experience.

    2) I want Bond to be selected for the upcoming test series against SL - currently he is just in for the one day matches. Unless he has said that his fitness is stopping him from playing the longer game we need him. Regardless of his lack of recent match play.

    3) I want us to play the next test series against Sri Lanka like our lives depend on it. Currently there is talk of a two tier test match scene with us being dropped into a division with Bangladesh Pakistan and the West Indies. I think the whole idea of two tiers is a bad idea because it doesn't work to have divisions of only 4 or 5 teams you get sick of watching the same teams every second year. But New Zealand needs to do its bit to put away this idea by starting to give the better teams a run for their money in the tests. At present the english and australian commentators regard us as a joke in test matches. Micheal Clarke said "yeah the kiwis are a much better one day side so we take them very seriously in ODIs". Which if you flip it around means we are wasting their time in test cricket. Our batsman simply don't have the technique the reason why we are good at ODIs is that we can last for 50 overs of batting but we can't last for 120 overs of batting. We need to start giving the top teams a better reason to play against us. Otherwise this two tier system idea won't go away.

    4) Glenn Turner was a great player but he is a very average selector - and I want accountability for the fact that we are ranked 7th in the world for tests. So I want his head.
I especially don't like the fact that we have a revolving door selection policy instead of a pick and stick policy. I would rather lose with the same players than see constant new faces. And then when someone gets injured they completely fall out of favour. I think in the past 3 years I have seen at some point 26 out of the 30 players on the CT list play for New Zealand. A rigid don't perform or you are out policy makes our batsman very nervous that they will be dropped. And it means they are reluctant to play their shots or when they do they play them they do so with a lack of conviction because part of them doesn't want to go for it. It places them under too much pressure. If a guy fails like 10 times fine drop him. But if it is 5 or 6 times that is ok if he has a good track record. Glenn Turner is on record for saying that he doesn't beleive in creating a closed shop and an old boys club. He wants to shake things up and reward good play at the domestic level. And that he can't tell how someone will perform at the international level until he has tried them so he wants to give them a try. This type of revolving door policy although understandable when you have a losing team is contributing to our demise further. The main revolving door I want is one for our selectors and I want Glenn Turner retired.

    And those are my thoughts.

This would probably be a good idea for the SL tour, his experience in playing on turning pitches and facing competent spin bowling would be valuable.
I like Elliott in ODI's, he is good in the middle overs for rotating the strike and keeping a reasonable run-rate without having to hit boundaries. Plus his fast-mediums have proven to be useful parnership breakers every now and then.
Broom's been a top FC performer and has age on his side, he may be yet to provide a match-winning limited over innings but I have faith in him, and the selectors should persist with him.
I imagine the selectors aren't interested in investing in a player who has already retired from one form and is getting a bit long in the tooth in terms of age. Styris' recent form (although mostly Twenty20) leaves a bit to be desired too.

I appreciate why'd you want that, but he has no recent FC games under his belt and it's unproven whether his fitness would hold or whether he'd perform over longer periods.
Tuffey/Martin/O'Brien and the mediums will be sufficient as spin will be the key.

I'd hope the boys would play like that for every series
But after the whole 'IPL-senior players' saga, the application of the older players is questionable.
I have no doubt the test-specialists and non-IPL players will go their hardest, I read somewhere Danny Flynn was watching old Fleming and Richardson footage in SL to help learn how to counter the spin battery.

I both agree and disagree with what Hurricane has said. Welcome to the forums btw Hurricane.

Basically, the stuff I don't agree with was mentioned by Nannes. The rest I like. Though with the selection (like openers) we have improved a bit. We gave How and Redmond a good go, and sadly we'll give the hopeless McIntosh a good run, but hopefuly we'll persist with Guptill. As long as we don't do anything dumb like two middle order dudes opening again that would be a nice start.

As for Michael Clarke, he is a one hand one bounce douche that skips the team song and becomes Katman's bitch for it, who cares what he thinks.

Aren't we ranked 8th? Or did WI losing to Bangers push us back up?

They did play like a 4XI but Shakib raped them.

All the top WI players are having a big fight with the board. WI got whitewashed by Bangers in Tests ODIs and only claimed the one T20 win

Had a good time waving the Bangers flag though.
