England's Preliminary CT squad

I had high hopes for Cook as a ODI batsman back in 2007 too, but they've since been extinguished. Since I've seen him bat regularly in the shorter game I just think he's far too rigid a player for success there - he's only really capable of hitting the ball where it should go, and good OD batsmen need to be able to maneouvre a ball somewhere that it should not be hit to. He's also not a player with a particularly wide range - bowl short to him and he'll smack you, bowl very full outside off there's a good chance he'll smack you (though he hits more to the cover fielders than I'd like him to). But that's virtually it.

Who are the guys with the best List A stats out of interest? Rather than all these test/FC specialist dudes you could try them?

There aren't very many. Batting in one-day (be it 65, 60, 55, 50, 45 or 40 overs) has never been a strong-point for England cricketers, and there's more of a dearth now than ever.

The two best at the current time were both raised in South Africa: Pietersen and Trott. Though it should be stressed that both were ignored over there and have only begun to produce since coming to England to play.

The batting lineup would probably end up looking something like this based on career List A figures:

1. Ed Joyce
2. Chris Benham
3. Johnathan Trott
4. Kevin Pietersen
5. Mark Ramprakash
6. Nic Pothas
7. Andrew Flintoff

Which frankly wouldn't be a good idea for several obvious reasons. :p

They definitely need to actually start looking at the players that are at least okay at one day cricket though, even if they aren't standout First Class players. The scores in List A cricket in England are generally pretty low so if someone can consistently average 35+ every season they're probably a good shout. Moore averages 26 in List A cricket though and is a less accomplished batsman at all forms of the game than Strauss, Cook, Bell, Bopara etc so trying him just because they others have "disappointed" (and I use that term loosely as they've performed a standard very similar to what their List A recorded indicated they might..) in OD cricket really doesn't make much sense. If they want a change in the top order, it should certainly be Trott or Joyce (with a very strong leaning towards Trott) coming in.

Bell's ODi record isn't actually terrible, is it? cbf to look it up
Yeah he averages 35 in both ODI and List A cricket, which is decent. He scores pretty slowly though and doesn't make up for it by batting through innings and hitting tons - 4 hundreds and 40 fifties in 180 List A games is terrible for someone who almost exclusively bats top 4.

You know what you're likely to get from Bell in ODIs - 40 off 55 or thereabouts followed by a soft dismissal, with the odd early failure thrown in there too.

Not sure what role Joyce could play as a batsman, so i wouldn't consider him. Mahmood no way yo, son should be kept far away from the international set-up let alone the ODI side.

Moore's a ridiculously bad one day player and Denly's about as good as Strauss and Cook, if not fractionally worse. Everyone seems to know that Strauss and Cook are First Class specialists but the alternatives they call for always seem to be even more that way inclined. Odd.
Now checking his stats on cricinfo. Moore is the wrong player i had in mind. Its Scott Newman from Surrey, who scored a career best 177 this seaosn & is currently having/had a top seaons in domestic OD cricket. So im just keeping a slight eye on him, to see if he's on top something good, or if he's another Loye or Brown in the making.

On Denly, he should be playing ODI cricket in the future. I reckon he's pretty close to T20 set-up.

Strauss also has justified an extended run as well. His recent form aided him in some top ODI batting in the WI recently. So he has guaranteed this whole season in the ODI set-up for now.

If he only wanted to play for England, I don't doubt we'd 'ave 'im. Sadly, he apparently doesn't, even though he's been playing county cricket for 6 years now.

BTW could this thread be merged with the *Unofficial* England ODI team thread? Seems a bit of a needless extra thread TBH - do we honestly need a new thread every time a new squad is released?

This is about the CT squad specifically and would be moved to the CT subforum when it is set up one would have thought. Therefore shouldn't be merged IMHO, alas I am not a mod

I've never been convinced by Bresnan, nor Mahmood. Harmison would get my vote, Mascarenhas definitely in the starting XI. Panesar shouldn't be overlooked for me, okay he can't bat or field, but if Swann has a rough patch (which he's bound to) then the experience of Monty might be useful.

I say it to rile up Uppercut about the Poms stealing every decent Irishmen. Would be gutted if the Poms picked him up personally.

O'Brien himself has said he fancies the gig, tbf. From The Sun:

"I want to play Test cricket and be the best player I can - so being involved with England would do that.

"I'm qualified to play for them, and if called up tomorrow, I'd be ready."

Can already see some discussion about the intervening ODIs though - which is near-inevitable.

Most people have just denounced this 30-man nonsense as, well... nonsense... and moved on.

If Prior were to have his next shocker sometime soon, would be far from against it myself.

Ironically though where England would probably benefit most from O'Brien would be ODIs.
