Please tell me the immoral, sorry immortal, SJS hasn't become a statsmonger.
No I havent but since these boys are doing this and are surely going to use stats to argue about it, I thought I might as well give them something I have readily available. :)

Having said that I am not completely against stats. They do tell you a lot. I just dont think they can be used as a sole barometer to assess the relative merits of two players. :)

For example from these decade wise figures I can see how the bowling and batting has changed over time. Look at the batting figures of the top batsmen of the 2000's and you can see how many players are getting averages over fifty over a decade. Surely when you compare it to as recent as the seventies you realise how much more difficult batting was (or converselyhow much better the bowling standards were).

Statistics can tell quite a bit if one sees them carefully, objectively but to use them solely as a barometer of comparative strengths of two players is a bit too simplistic and is, if you excuse the smell of condescension, intellectual sloth.

Shri

Mr. Glass
Dhoni ahead of Gilchrist, and Symonds ahead of Kallis or Flintoff (or several other players)? Would be interested to hear your reasoning.
No reasoning. Just players that I enjoyed watching more than others. Thats why I added IMO at the start of the post.

It is interesting to see from the changing colours how the domination of England and Australia was challenged from the fifties onwards by the newer Test nations. West Indies started dominating and the others joined in so that in the 80's decade border is the sole representative of the two original combatants.

Its interesting to note that the 80;s has the widest participation from the Test playing nations of the times. The competition from West Indies, India, Pakistan and even from New Zealand more or less reached its highest combined level by the 80's.

Another interesting sight is the demise of English bowling from at least two specialist bowlers in every decade (bar one) till the fifties, England have not a single representative in the last four decades. Yes it is my selection but it is indicative of the terrible malaise that afflicts English cricket. Great Test sides can not be built without at least two great bowlers and England hasn't shown much talent at the world stage for close to half a century now.

Top list. But i'd have Gibbs over Prasanna , for spinner of the 60's.
I thought a lot about it. I have seen both of them bowl. Prasanna was a much more attacking bowler with more variations. Gibbs tended to be defensive by comparison and lacked the variety of Prasanna. This reflects in the difference in their strike rates.

Here are their figures for the decade (although I must stress that pure figures have not been the basis of my selection as can be easily seen.

Code:
[B]Bowler Tests	Wickets	Avg	St Rate	Wkts/Test[/B]
Gibbs 42	184	27.9	84.2	4.38
Prasanna	22	113	27.1	67.8	5.14
It was a tough choice but I thought Prasanna of the sixties scored over Gibbs of the sixties :)

Going by stats alone MoYo for the batsman of this century
You are right. Only 34 batsmen have scored 5000 or more runs in a decade over the 132 years of test cricket. Of those 32 Yousuf has the highest average of 63.43. Barrington with 60.99 is the only other in the sixties. Unfortunately it wasn't enough for this selector to put him in his team for that decade :)
