Well done SJS. Quite a deal of effort and some interesting findings for ranking according to the best AVERAGES at TEST LEVEL......but, not necessarily the best players from each decade. Surely players such as Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock and several others from Ali Bacher's teams should be there somewhere in the list of best players? I realise that South Africa had been banned from international competition, but their batsmen and bowlers still excelled outside of the test arena in county and state cricket. It would be good if the database also captured players' information from other forms of first class cricket, including ODI. In addition, the reliance on averages as a means of ranking the best players can be an issue when players have selfishly batted for their averages, often ignoring the team's interests (eg. Geoff Boycott is one of many in this category).:laugh::laugh:

You are right. Only 34 batsmen have scored 5000 or more runs in a decade over the 132 years of test cricket. Of those 32 Yousuf has the highest average of 63.43. Barrington with 60.99 is the only other in the sixties. Unfortunately it wasn't enough for this selector to put him in his team for that decade :)
Mohammad Yousuf also averages under 30 against the 3 best bowling attacks of his generation: Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Also, I'm interested as to why you think Allan Donald was better then Curtly Ambrose?

To these I added my wicketkeepers for the decade and we have another job.

Code:

1900's	Hobbs Barnes Rhodes Faulkner Carter
1920's	Hobbs Tate Freeman Gregory Oldfield

2000's	Ponting McGrath Muralitharan	Kallis Gilchrist
Chose an all time 12 with the conditions
1. Of course we should have two openers
2. At least two spinners
3. At least two pacers
4. At least one genuine all rounder
5. Of course a wicket keeper AND
6. Not more than one player from one decade.

I quickly came up with the following but there are other possibilities.

Code:
[B]#	Player Decade[/B]

1	Hobbs 1920's
2	Grace 1880's
3	Bradman 1940's
4	Hammond 1930's
5	Tendulkar	1990's
6	Sobers 1960's
7	Benaud 1950's
8	Marshall	1980's
9	Barnes 1900's
10	Lillee 1970's
11	Muralitharan	2000's
12	Blackham(k)	1890's
