Word on the street says the former Surrey coach is close to landing a international coaching assignment with a fairly strong associate with ODI status. Whats the opinion of this guy's ability as a coach/team manager etc?

Turned around his son's fortunes as a batsman, IIRC.

I seem to recall him making a one-off comeback a while ago (maybe even a decade now, he said betraying his own vintage) when Surrey were short. Went ok despite being closer to 50 than 40 if memory serves.

EDIT: 11 years and was 44 according to cricinfo. The recollection grows fainter as the years grow shorter, obv...

Well, I'd not go quite that far - Butcher M was always a fine player and had enjoyed some brief Test success at the time he had the famed working-with-Dad winter in 2000/01. However, he ironed-out new faults that had crept into his game and removed older ones during that spell, and he enjoyed his most productive Test years (2001-2004) thereafter. But it's not like Alan turned him from hopeless to brilliant.

As Surrey coaches of recent times go he's way behind Keith Medlycott (did his best work as Medlycott's #2 in fact) but was rather unfortunate to have lost his position there IMO.

Not altogether surprised that Surrey dispensed with his services (after the season we had last year, someone's head had to go on the block), but wish him well, obviously.

People often forget he also had a spell as Glamorgan captain and had a lot to do with their progress from hopeless also-rans to respected upper-table county.

Far more successful at Glamorgan than Surrey as a batsman, indeed.

Even lent one of his sons to Glamorgan before he eventually came home to Surrey as well.

Big announcement was meant to be yesterday, but no word from Cricket Kenya in the press.

From what I remember, he spent more time in the tusker tent than coaching the team, despite the success they had then
