I don't think Symonds gives a flying **** anymore. I can see him playing IPL for the remainder of his days after some more controversy when back with the Bulls.

I should probably re-write or update my article about him on my blog, it had all his controversys to a certain point in January or so last year IIRC, when I was calling for his sacking. I was partially willing to let him get help with his career and problems, and get his career backon track, but I've given up all hope now, and in a way am happy about this walking headline being ommited from the side.

EDIT: I wrote the article on January 24th 2009, not last year, a day after his drunken radio call.

A quote from my article.

I’m sorry Roy, but that’s the last straw. I can’t take any more of this. I want Cricket Australia to tear up your contract immediately and never come back to play for Australia again.

x2 now.

^ LOL!

As it turns out Symonds had a 'no drinking in public' clause in his CA contract - what a joke!

It turns out he went to a London pub to watch the State of Origin game after the game against New Zealand and had some beers. Some members of the Australian cricket team were drinking with him and Symonds was not said to be causing any disturbances. Given that with Symonds' 'no drinking in public' clause, if team mates see him drinking in an establishment they're supposed to remove him, I wonder if they'll face any fines?

Take drugs (Warne) - you're in

Take money from bookies (Warne & Gibbs) - more than welcome

Punch your team-mate (Harby) - right this way, sir

Have a beer away from the game - sorry, but we dont accept your type 8-)

You don't write spin for politicans do you?

It's difficult putting the onus on his teammates as well. In that situation no one is going to say, "Sorry Roy, but we're going to have to stop watching the SOO and go back to the hotel if you have a beer". It's possible the no drinking in public clause wasn't well thought out. A no trouble in public clause may have been a better option.

A don't be a boof 'ead clause might have worked better. That way CA could choose to enforce it dependent on the team situation of the tour

You think they actually will?
Not over this. But I doubt Symonds ability to avoid generating some controversy in the IPL that will have the ever-scandal-ready Indian media out for his blood.

The other thing about the 'only play in the IPL' plan is that it is a pretty fraught proposition, especially for bowlers or athletic types. McGrath and Warne were good the first year in retirement (when they'd played competitve cricket elsewhere only months ago) but both looked much more rusty this time. How effective a Symonds is going to show up for IPL 2010 if he spends the next ten months alternating between a bar and the pier with a rod?

There shouldn't have been any clauses at all. He should be on the same contract as everyone else. We have Katich strangling Clarke after the game and it gets brushed aside, while Symonds has a few drinks in a public place while watching the State of Origin and he has his contract torn up. It's a bit of a joke. I understand Symonds has been a serial offender, but to say to him for the rest of his Australian career he can't drink in public it's a bit of a joke. Either give him the same contract as everyone else, or not contract him at all.

He's the one who accepted the contract.

In the end, if he cared that much about playing for Australia, he would have abided by the clauses.

There's a thought Symonds won't just lend himself to the IPL, but will rather contract himself out as a 20/20 specialist. He could gain lots of money from IPL, Pro 20 and a variety of other leagues around the world. Although, I guess that still gives him a good 8 months off.

I agree with the highlighted bit, because it's hard to police and puts unwanted pressure on his teammates to do so. It makes him their problem.

Symonds put himself in this position though, and I guess it was CA's way of saying 'we're giving you a chance to clean up your act'.

As Vic said, he signed up for it.

It may be academic whether Qld want him or not, his manager is quoted on Cricinfo saying he'll play where he's going to enjoy it most, and intimating that he's had offers to play South African domestic instead and he may go down that route.

Queensland Cricket have already said they'd like Symonds to play for the state and Fearon said, so have domestic sides outside Australia. "It's fair to say he's constantly sought after from many regions, both prior to this happening and currently," Fearon told AAP. "They are areas we haven't explored before because he's always been focused on playing international cricket. They're options for him if he chooses to do that."
and

Fearon said at this time Symonds wanted to surround himself with people he felt would support him and have the right influence on him. "As far as where the Australian team is headed and the culture within, that's changed significantly and he's no longer a good fit there. Queensland Cricket have been a big part of his career and are supporting him now and would be an avenue for him as well."

Looks like with offers on the table symmo will be lost to qld,a weak looking qld side next year.

Yeah, we could do with an experienced batsman, maybe Jimmy Maher can return!

Broad, Kruger, Carseldine, Reardon, Hopes, Hartley, Swan, Simpson, Noffke, Laughlin is a decent bunch to work with and nearly all of them should be available throughout the entire season which is great for team continuity.

Also if Maher was to return, Simpson wouldn't be assured a spot if he underperforms again.

What he is going to play in s africa as if they would pay him better than aussie teams.
3rd party sponsorship. The franchise would pay him a nominal wage and the sponsor will take care of the rest. The same thing happened with Jayasuriya and the Natal Dolphins this year.

Domestic limited overs cricket is very well supported in South Africa (MTN games get more than 10,000 and Pro20 are nigh on sell-outs), so there is definitely a market for sponsors to capitalise upon.
