england not playing in sharjah till 1997 is wrong info. i remember a tournament in 1987-88 which featured an england team led by john emburey and i remember ravi shastri holding out to the long-on off phil edmonds for 8 runs. india had a pace bowler called arun making his debut. he slipped and fell down bowling his first ball.

abdul rahman bukhatir who ran the show in sharjah used the tournaments to organize benefit funds for retired cricketers. asif iqbal, ex pakistani cricketer, was the cricketing consultant/organizer for the CBFS events (cricketers benefit funds series).

india opted out of these tournaments sometime in late 90s citing step motherly treatment meted out to them. i thought it was an excuse since they were getting whipped by pakistan too frequently to keep going back there. later it emerged that the betting racket was running the show in sharjah and it wasnt possible to protect the sanctity of the game in that venue.

dawood ibrahim, a notorious criminal and narco terrorist from india, used to live in dubai and the tv cameras would always catch him watching cricket from his private box. that used to irk indians a lot.

EDIT: shastri had got out for 7. caught by edmonds.

The Indian Government ( not BCCI for the record) imposed a three-year ban on "off-shore" cricket after the match-fixing scandal . The timing of this coincided with the ICC omitting Sharjah from its 10-year calendar . Asif Iqbal, the Chief Coordinator of the tournament resigned after his name cropped up in as many as three independent inquiries (in India, Pakistan and South Africa) investigating illegal betting and match-fixing. With his departure the main liasion between the various boards and the tournament organizers was lost. With India absent, the sponsors Coca Cola (India) withdrew their contract, as the small print said the both India and Pakistan must play in any series . Dubai-based Pakistani jewellers ARY Gold stepped in as sponsor and a few tournaments were run with Pakistan , Sri Lanka and a third team. These were financial disasters to WorldTel, as they were getting from ARY , half the amount that Coke had paid. A relieved WorldTel had no intention of bidding afresh after its contract with ARY was done. The organizers could not sell the tv rights for future tournaments as all other players in the field wanted India there. That was it for Sharjah.
