Jamie Troughton

International Regular
Maybe it's just me and it's early days in his innings, but this guy just does not look up to the top level.

He's nowhere near getting bat on ball against Boje and struggling severly against Martin van Jaarsveld.

If he's one of the best batting talents in England, they are in trouble! Should he prove me wrong however, I'll eat my words.

International 12th Man
No you're right he has struggled and looks a little out of his depth so far, which is a shame because he's been racking them up in county cricket (both forms). I guess either way it is good experience for him and if he continues to develop hopefully he will deliver on his early promise....

I couldn't believe it when van Jaarsvel came on and Trescothick just lobbed the second ball to Boje.... :(

I havent seen him much, but i have never seen him bat well, and he didnt look like doing much in any of the matches so far...

Hindsight is a great thing, but i cant help thinking maybe Ian Bell?

Even as a Warwickshire fan I was doubtful about his call-up, but Bell certainly wasn't in form to justify a selection.

He is, however working on his medium pace bowling, and that could be a big benefit to him when the squads are selected in the future.

Ian harvey usually looks out of his depth against international bowling attacks

I agree...when you see players like Craig Spearman & Ian Harvey scoring heavily at County level you have to wonder how good some of the opposition is.
These guys are good first class players but at international level they've goth been average to poor most times.

However to average 50 at FC level & 35 at OD level you still have to have something about you so I have also been a little disappointed with Troughton..he's around 23 so its not like he's an 18 year old with little experience.
I think he might come right, but maybe they should have played him in tests before ODI's.

Again this shows that you don't need to have a good ttechnique to score runs at FC level - look at the likes of Hick, R*********, C*****, and even Chris Harris plus others that have scored tons in FC cricket, but can't really perform at the top level.

Troughton may be 23, but he didn't play until last season, so in that sense he is one with very little experience.

True, but Graeme Hick has a FC average of 50, over 120 FC hundreds, a highest score of 402*, and yet has been a failure at Test level. And Hick is probably twice the batsman Troughton is.

So how many seasons has Troughton had?
he's played almost 25 FC games hasn't he? so these days thats pretty good for a youngster who has been touted as a future international player..in Pakistan they would have had him in after 6 or 7 FC matches.

However looking at him, he doesn't really look like a very stylish batsman...but I just saw that shot that he played off Ntini yesterday and I guess you're right..it comes down to lack of experience against quality opposition.

So if he's averaging 47 with 7 hundreds & 6 fifties at County level then that has to suggest that the standard between International & County level is quite dramatic.

But he's not a specialist batsman!
Nether is Bichel but he is always handels himself very well with the bat at International cricket.

Harvey actauly does have decent deffence but he just throws his wicket away.

Other than that his backlift is two high witch is wy he strugels with fast bowling like he did with Bond.

I give him another chance. But at 24 Troughton has get to show it
Why? Some players are late bloomers. I'm not saying that you let him accumulate and average of 20 over several years, but don't give up on him so young. IMO a good batsman can play at a high level until around 37 or 38. That would mean that he would still have 13 or 14 years ahead of him at 24. Even a 10 year career is a good career. As I said before, don't give up on him so young.

Ive always wondered why there is talk of batsmen retiring as soon as they get into the thirties... I guess personal reasons usually, but surely the reactions are still as sharp at that age? Just look at Stewart... Kim Barnett etc.

I think Stephen Fleming is a great example of a late bloomer.
When he debuted for NZ at the age of 21 everyone knew he had exceptional talent but it has taken him a good 8 or 9 years to finally understand how to use it.

I also put it down to when he went to Middlesex in 2001. I think that has been the best thing he has ever done.
