    Cricket Australia Contracts 2009-10

Figured I'd move this from the Phil Jaques thread to create its own thread - it's worth discussing this year. Will be a very interesting list IMO.

Don't think there is an official date for their announcement, its been 'in the next few weeks' for the past 6 weeks now.

    Anyway, my thoughts:

    The current list is

    NAME STATE AGE

    Doug Bollinger NSW 26

    Nathan Bracken NSW 30

    Beau Casson NSW 25

    Stuart Clark NSW 32

    Michael Clarke NSW 27

    Brad Haddin NSW 30

    Matthew Hayden QLD 36

    Ben Hilfenhaus TAS 25

    Brad Hodge VIC 33

    James Hopes QLD 29

    David Hussey VIC 30

    Mike Hussey WA 32

    Philip Jaques NSW 28

    Mitchell Johnson QLD 26

    Simon Katich NSW 32

    Brett Lee NSW 31

    Stuart MacGill NSW 37

    Shaun Marsh WA 24

    Ashley Noffke QLD 30

    Ricky Ponting TAS 33

    Andrew Symonds QLD 32

    Shaun Tait SA 25

    Adam Voges WA 28

    Shane Watson QLD 26

    Cameron White VIC 24

I reckon out of that, Casson, Hodge and Noffke will lose them (rightly or wrongly). Voges, Tait, White, Jaques, Bollinger and possibly Bracken and Symonds will be under the pump to retain theirs. Obviously Hayden and MacGill have retired.

    So basically, you've got:
    Clark
    Clarke
    Haddin
    Hilfenhaus
    Hopes
    D Hussey
    M Hussey
    Johnson
    Katich
    Lee
    Marsh
    Ponting
    Watson.

13 from last years list that I'd say are certain to retain them.

    Add to that:
    Siddle
    Hughes
    North
    Ferguson
    Haurtiz
would be pretty certain to pick them up.

So there is 18 of the 25. IMO, you then have:
    Voges
    Tait
    White
    Bollinger
Bracken (most people would argue he's a certainty, but I just get the feeling he's starting to fade away Gillespie style)
Symonds (LOTS of variables with this one)
    Jaques
    McGain
    McDonald
    Warner
    Geeves
    Laughlin
    Harwood
    Klinger
    Rogers
    Magoffin
    R Harris
    Krejza
    Hodge
    Noffke
    Manou

fighting out for the last 7 contracts, with guys like Burt Cockley and George Bailey the smokies for a deal.

So out of that group of 21 fighting for 7 contracts, I'd imagine that:
    Tait
    White
    Bollinger
    Bracken
    Symonds
    Geeves
    Jaques

would win out for the last few contracts. IT's hard to say though - McDonald, Rogers and McGain would only get a Test rating from the selectors, Warner probably only a Twenty20 (maybe one day as well), Laughlin probably the same as well. So while those names might appear in various squads, they probably won't get enough points up to get picked on the initial list.

Having the specialists in all 3 forms makes it tough - they rank the players in Test, OD and now probably Twenty20 on a points scale, with Test being weighted the highest. With some many players in and out of the side though, there are a lot of guys who would rank on one chart and not on another. Hence why I think someone like Bracken might be in danger.

It's going to be an interesting list.

    What does everyone else reckon?

Bracken's been poor this year in ODIs, but I'd be amazed if he wasn't to receive another contract.

In my opinion, there's a possibility that if Bracken loses his contract he might just chuck international cricket altogether. It's not a giant leap to think that, given his past frustration at missing out on Test selection.

That's just far too great a risk for the Australians to take.

Of your group of 21 I reckon it'll be Tait, White, Bollinger, Bracken, Symonds, Jacques and McDonald.

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't be suprised if Bracken spat the dummy either if he missed out. Once he figured he wasn't in the frame for Tests, he didn't seem to play much first class cricket after that - injured or not, I'm not convinced that it is a coincidence. I reckon his lack of quality match bowling has shown in recent months.

I think he will probably get a gig this year, but next year I wouldn't be so sure. He could be under fire from a guy like Laughin for his OD & Twenty20 spot. Put it this way, I don't think he'll make the next world cup.

As for McDonald/Geeves, I just figure that Geeves is in the top 15 or so for all 3 forms of the game, while McDonald only really gets a look in in the Tests. So Geeves sneaks ahead for mine.

In regards to Hodge losing his: you can't tell me he's not in the 6 best bats in Australia, but seemingly his cards are well and truly marked...

Can't see Klinger getting a contract, no matter how many runs he scored. After 7 lean years with Vic, I think CA would be looking for evidence last year wasn't a fluke. If he was in the frame for selection at all, considering he had great OD form last season too, I'd have thought he at least would have been tried in some of the Aussie OD/T20 games.

Manou may get one which would be huge. Would imagine Tait might lose his, though.

Brakken has had a bad year so has dave hussey, mike hussey(apart from one dayers),brett lee, andrew symmonds, shane watson, phil jaques the list goes on.
Hardest 25 to pick in eones.
So many underperformers, such a disastrous year in ausssie cricket.
    I couldn't pick them.
I know dave warner picked up a contract late aussie season, does this mean he will be in that conracted list.

    I'd imagine not.

Be interesting to see whether they maybe formalize a tiered contract system with maybe a few extra players, esp. in regards to Twenty20. Either way, I can see a number of players outside the official 25 earning a contract throughout the next year by playing enough games to earn themselves one.

Many players like brett lee, dave hussey, dave warner, phl jaques, brad hodge, could get contracts for 1 or 2 off match performances.their are those like brakken, symmo, tait, cameron white who have no performances of note for australia this year.
Ben a miserable year for performances.
Think a lot of australian players will pick up contracts for past deeds.

I don't think Twenty20 is taken into consideration when selecting the top 25. If it's not, it'll help Katich, Hughes etc and I think that's the right way to go about it.

Even though there's a T20 world cup in the contract period?

Just for fun. I'll work out my 25 Test players and give them a ranking x 2 as Test is more important. I'll start with Ponting and give him 26 x 2 so 52 so that the 25th player on the list gets more points then players outside the top 25.

    Test: R Ponting M Johnson M Clarke M Hussey S Clark S Katich B Haddin P Siddle P Hughes B Lee
    M North P Jaques A Symonds S Watson A McDonald N Hauritz B Hilfenhaus D Bollinger B McGain
    B Hodge C Rogers D Hussey G Manou B Geeves S Tait

    ODI: R Ponting, M Johnson, B Lee, A Symonds, M Hussey, B Haddin, N Bracken, M Clarke, J Hopes, C Ferguson, S Marsh, S Watson, D Hussey, P Siddle, N Hauritz, S Tait, S Clark, C White, B Geeves,B Hilfenhaus, R Harris, B Hodge, B Laughlin, A Voges, P Hughes.

    R Ponting 52, 26 = 78 M Johnson 50, 25 = 75 M Clarke 48, 19 = 67 M Hussey 46, 22 = 68
    S Clark 44, 10 = 54 S Katich 42, 1 = 43 B Haddin 40, 21 = 61 P Siddle 38, 13 = 51 P Hughes 36, 2 = 38 B Lee 34, 24 = 58 M North 32, 1 = 33 P Jaques 30, 1 = 31 A Symonds 28, 23 = 51 S Watson 26, 15 = 41 A McDonald 24, 1 = 25 N Hauritz 22, 12 = 34 B Hilfenhaus 20, 7 = 27 D Bollinger 18, 1 = 19
    B McGain 16, 1 = 17 B Hodge 14, 5 = 19 C Rogers 12, 1 = 13 D Hussey 10, 14 = 24 G Manou 8, 1 = 9
    B Geeves 6, 8 = 14 S Tait 4, 11 = 15 N Bracken 2, 20 = 22 J Hopes 2, 18 = 20 C Ferguson 2, 17 = 19
    S Marsh 2, 16 = 18 C White 2, 9 = 11 R Harris 2, 6 = 8 B Laughlin 2, 4 = 6 A Voges 2, 3 = 5

So in order I would go:
    1 R Ponting
    2 M Johnson
    3 M Hussey
    4 M Clarke
    5 B Haddin
    6 B Lee
    7 S Clark
    8 P Siddle
    8 A Symonds
    10 S Katich
    11 S Watson
    12 P Hughes
    13 N Hauritz
    14 M North
    15 P Jaques
    16 B Hilfenhaus
    17 A McDonald
    18 D Hussey
    19 N Bracken
    20 J Hopes
    21 D Bollinger
    21 B Hodge
    21 C Ferguson
    24 S Marsh
    25 B McGain

Seems fairly accurate. Dunno if McDonald should be ahead of ODI regulars in Hopes and Bracken. I think the selectors will rate the injured Lee, Symonds, Clark, Jaques highly..

The Allan Border Medal has never awarded points for T20 matches.

Doubt Cricket Australia will care about weighing T20 matches until either we win a World Championship or host one.

Yeah, Twenty20 won't be taken into account. Maybe a bonus pay structure for those, like a Warner, who play them; maybe higher match payments.

It is interesting though, given the amount of money the T20 international matches bring into Cricket Australia.

Also, I reckon the AB medal should count T20 matches, or at least the ODI prize should be combined with T20s. If someone has a storming T20 world cup this summer and plays a big part in winning it for Australia, it would be a shame if that's not recognised in the prizes for the year somehow.

Could award him a set of genuine Mickey Mouse ears at the AB medal presentation.
