Wizards look for fast spells
25 June 2003
By GEOFF LONGLEY

Canterbury is trying to sign a new-ball pace bowler in the coming weeks to flesh out its squad for the domestic season.

Having secured wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum, who will bat in the top four, the Wizards are after a fast bowler, according to chief executive Richard Reid, to add some bite to an attack which was often pedestrian last season.

It is hoped that the highly-promising Wade Cornelius will return to the first-class arena he made such an impact in two seasons ago. Cornelius missed most of last season with a recurrence of the stress fracture he suffered at the end of the previous season.

Warren Wisneski remains a key cog in the Wizards' bowling wheel, but he has struggled with hamstring injuries during the last two seasons.

"It would be great to have those two back and firing but they have been injury plagued and I think we need someone else to help spearhead the attack."

Reid said Chris Martin was left to carry a heavy workload in their absence. Martin has been dropped from the list of Black Caps' contracted players, but the elevation of Paul Wiseman to the New Zealand top 20 has effectively meant a swap. McCullum is also a New Zealand contracted player, which will not impact on Canterbury's 11 contractees.

Reid indicated Canterbury was unlikely to be interested in medium pacer Paul Hitchcock, who is leaving Wellington after being unable to break into the four-day team there.

"We have some good third seamers down here ourselves but we need someone who is going to knock opening batsmen over."

A player like the hard-working Central Districts pace bowler Michael Mason, who is on the fringe of the Black Caps, could be the sort of player Canterbury is seeking.

Reid said the period for negotiation was underway after the Black Caps' contracts were listed earlier this month.

Players have to indicate by July 1 whether they are intending to remain with their existing association, while the domestic contracts must be finalised by July 15.

Reid believes the acquisition of McCullum will mean Canterbury does not need to pursue any other batting specialists.

"I think we have enough ability in the province. We have Gary Stead and Michael Papps and if Chris Harris is not playing for the Black Caps he will be around.

"There are also all the promising younger players coming on like Peter Fulton, Neil Broom and Shanan Stewart."

Looks like someone(another) from out of the region is coming to Canterbury for the next season.

hard to say..i had no idea that Paul Hitchcock was leaving Wellington though..Otago should probably try & gain a hold of him.

Theres no use for him to go back to Auckland where he began because Auckland are loaded with bowlers & all-rounders like Adams, Mills, Canning, Brooke Walker, Rob Nicol etc so if for example Mason goes to Canterbury then I wouldn't mind betting that Hitchcock could end up at C.D

It appears as though Canterbury are going in for the kill. They want a strike bowler who's 1st choice..not a fringe bowler getting little game time for another province.

It could be anyone..but whats the bet its either Michael Mason, Daryl Tuffey or Ian Butler.

oh well I won't go as far as saying it will be him, but it sounds like Mason could be the man..I guess he's looking to move closer to the selectors.

But this is another example of the sign of the times that transfers are starting to occur. Canterbury are probably of the richest cricket regions in NZ & I guess they're looking to enhance their muscles with some NZ players.

Canterbury will be a force this season thats for sure.
They've got some good youth batsmen in Broom & Fulton aswell as Papps who needs to show some more consistency.

From the Press...

Canterbury wicketkeeper-batsman Gareth Hopkins is moving to play in Otago after the arrival of southern gloveman Brendon McCullum in Christchurch.

In a game of revolving cricket doors, Hopkins feels he has no option but to seek his future elsewhere after McCullum's move.

"Ideally I would like to stay in Canterbury, I have settled here but the bottom line is I just want to play," Hopkins said yesterday.

"It was made reasonably clear to me by Canterbury that I would have more opportunities in Otago."

Otago's keeper for much of last season was Peter McGlashan, who came from Central Districts.

Hopkins said he supposed it was a fact of life with the contract system, introduced last year, that players would have to move.

"The idea is to get the best 66 players playing and if one squad has 20 of them the others have to move elsewhere and I guess I'm a casualty of that."

Apart from McCullum, Hopkins has in past seasons been battling with Michael Papps for the gloves in the one-day arena.

Hopkins fought back last season from the shock of not being awarded a contract for Canterbury, despite his experience, to have a satisfactory season.

He scored 451 runs at 32.21 and made 23 dismissals in a Canterbury side which finished at the foot of the table.

An undoubted batting highlight came when he scored centuries in successive innings against Auckland 113 and 175 not out – only the second Canterbury player to achieve the feat. He made 42 one-day appearances for the province.

Hopkins, 26, still harbours hopes of challenging for Black Caps status. Otherwise, he said, he would not be playing.

"I believe going south will be a fresh start and give me a new lease of life."

I am so annoyed. McCullam is such a freak.(to put it nicely)

Well it was just a matter of time...he really got forced out because while McCullum is there he'll definately not keep.
And I reckon the NZ selectors are wanting Papps to also continue with his keeping while McCullum is with the NZ team so Hopkins had no choice really but to make the switch to Otago.

At least at Otago he'll get guaranteed gametime in both forms..whereas at Canterbury he wasn't playing OD's.

I'd say that NZ seriously need to start introducing some younger players..but not as many as England, Pakistan or the West Indies have.

I think they should keep the same team that did well in Sri Lanka for the series in India but for the home series against Pakistan & South Africa they should DEFINATELY put McIntosh in to open with Richardson & either Cumming or Nicol in the middle order.

I would like to see McIntosh over there instead of Horne in India.

In NZ they need to breed players.. They NEED to replace Harris, Cairns, Sinclair anyway.

Hitchcok is a decent one day bowler. He has played only 1 first class match, so I dont blame him for moving.

I don't know what the hell Wellington are doing letting a bowler like Paul Hitchcock leave..I think thats a big mistake & I think he's been under valued by Wellington.

I presume he'll also be off to Otago to get regular game time.

I don't think Hitchcock will get much time with any team but Otago.. There seems to be a lot of first change bowlers around.

Not really to do with the domestic game, but I've been keeping a few tabs on the World Stars that have joined up with Lashings CC (funded by a mulit-millionaire, who gets what he wants etc) and a few players from NZ are here, and thought I might just let you know that in a recent game Lashings scored a massive 323 for five from their allotted 40 overs with New Zealander Craig McMillan smashing a brutal 14 fours and 14 sixes during a 106-ball unbeaten 185. :O Now that's some hitting!

Also in the same game C Harris hit 58.

That is good for Craig. I really hope he gets back into the NZ team next season. He is classy and IF he had more patients he could be one of the best batters in the world.

Well seeing that Harris actually got to 50 makes me think that this match was a bit comical..but at least Macca is playing some shots :)

Does that mean that international cricket is comical as well because he has done it enough for NZ in the past.

Isn't that more due to the amount of OD Cricket he's played though.

Overall, for one with such a good FC batting record, he's disappointed at the Top Level.
