Note: Could not include Vettori (and kaneria) as his average was more than 2 runs in excess of the cut off limit; in fact, three spinners - shivlal yadav, paul adams and john bracewell - lie between him and panesar.

I can see this topic getting heated very quickly - Warne for me personally.

By the way, how did Panesar make the list but Vettori didn't?

100 test wickets averaging under 35 runs per wicket

and we dont count wickets or runs against zim/ban
Fair enough criteria I guess. I'd bet that Vettori would secure just as many votes as Panesar had he been included on the list though.

Mainly because he's a gun bat. And Panesar;s recent form has been appalling. Actual comparison of their spinning abilities alone would put Panesar ahead of Vettori. But I'd rather have Vettori in my team.

DWTA

MSP gets more rip but Vettori is an infinitely smarter bowler.

Unfortunately, their respective figures don't agree. And Panesar took on a full fledged Aussie team in Australia with reasonable success. Plus, Vettori really improved into a gun bowler only a few years back and was mediocre till then.

Yeah Vettori is a better bowler now.

Incidentally Vettori's best bowling performance was, for a start against Australia, and secondly in 2000 (so obviously more than a few years back) - just thought that was a bit contradictory to your post.

Whatever it takes!!!
as close as it is between Warne and Murali, I m going with Murali by the slightest bit imaginable.. Might change with time, as I get the feeling Murali is hitting his end of career trough now and his figures and performances could take a bit of a dive down bringing him a notch lower to where Warne is currently, at least IMHO...

did you check the stats posted here? without zim/bang, murali's figures are closer to warne's than otherwise.
