Not getting the full complexity of the situation at the moment on cricinfo. Have the wickets been lost from trying to force the runs in setting a total, or has S.A. (Kallis in particular) just been bowling that well?!

Those 4 wickets did the world of good for us, now we actually have a chance to win if these two play in ODI mode.

Should declare with a 400/450 lead (unless that takes too long, we want a day and a half perhaps to bowl them out). Johnson and Haddin should get us their quickly, and Hughes being the rock to our innings.

Haddin certainly has balls, walks in after losing a few wickets and thinks: "letz hitz sixezz"

Anyone else think a 350 score would be better for us then something like 450+? A score they think they could get would force them to take on Hilfenhaus' outswingers and Johnson bowling a metre outside off stump which in these conditions would be suicide. If it gets too high though, they'll just shut up shop and leave everything.

Don't think it matters in these conditions. Even if you shut up shop, eventually you're going to get one that you'll find difficult to cope with.

Yea, but if you're going to declare after making 150 or so (or you are all out for 150), then the decision not to enforce the followon doesn't make much sense. You wasted time, and in case you have to bat again, you should be comfortable making 150 at least. For Ponting not to have enforced the follow on, I'm guessing he is looking to put on at least 250.

Ponting really should be backing his bowlers to take the 10 required wickets especially after their effort in the 1st innings. I'd say the total will be dictated more by time than runs. You'd want them to have a good day and a half at them with another go at the new ball sometime in the middle session on the last day would be good and allow for reverse later in the day. I'd be setting 425-450 with a day and a half left.

I'm talking about the positives of getting bowled out, obv Ponting won't declare till SA are well out of the game. The decision was a poor one regardless, as was the decision to only play 3 bowlers.

Very simple way to look at it is that Ponting wont declare whilst Hughes is a chance for a century on debut

He's 69 now so needs another 31.

If Haddin stays in with him, chances are that he'll score at about the same rate.

So that's 62, chuck in some extras and the lead will be 440-450 at that time
