I doubt it TBH - he's hardly played any.
Yeah Panesar was rarely bowling with the kind of flight or varying his pace in the manner that was required by a test quality bowler even before his ODI stint. People like to think that once upon a time he was actually a matchwinner, but the bottom line is that he never was. Swann certainly appears to have the sort of intelligence required by a test match spinner that Panesar seems to lack.

Indeed, and that statement is no longer valid. Im convinced that there is a spinner worse than Hauritz and that only happened after I watched Cameron White bowl.
As far as Hauritz is concerned, I have watched him bowl, and he is still pretty atrocious. If he plays more than a handful of test matches, Id expect his average to go all the way above 50.
Harsh on Cameron White, he's not a bowler. He's a batsman who throws down top-spinning medium-slow bowling in his spare time, which makes him reasonably useful for breaking partnerships since it has the "and now for something completely different" effect. But beyond that he won't carry much threat. It's not his fault the selectors foolishly picked him as a specialist bowler. You might as well say "I'm convinced there is a spinner worse than Hauritz and it's Michael Vaughan".

I honestly think that if Vaughan hadn't had batting to concentrate on he could easily have been a better fingerspinner than Hauritz.

Not that he'd have been anything particularly brilliant of course. But it's easy to forget that Vaughan's initial selection for Test cricket wasn't as a pure batsman but as a batsman who bowled.

Much as that might, just possibly, one day be the case... right now, not a chance.
Very much agree with that.

With an offspinner, all you want is what Hauritz did in the 1st innings against South Africa (i.e. keep it tight and pick up the odd crucial wicket). With Krejza's big haul in India, let's not forget that even someone like Clarke bagged a heap of wickets on that pitch four years earlier. I'd like to see Krejza pick up some wickets and keep it tight on less helpful tracks back here in the Weet Bix Cup competition. That said, I do like the revs he puts on the ball; though there is far more to being a spinner than that.
that pitch should not count in using any comparisons

well said, white is appalling

not sure if i agree, i'm only going on what someone else said about the one dayers, but i feel he doesn't flight it as much anymore and apparently in the previous series struggling with length, but that could be more to do with lack of match practice. he has played a handful of one dayers and was tidy.

although he might not run through a team, he had more chance than most to do so, but india is a tough gig also, so maybe we should wait before we write him off, i haven't seen enough of swann to judge, but from all reports he goes well and could replace monty soon.

nothing is too harsh on white, he was atrocious

Could be because he's a batsman hey.
he came into first class cricket as a bowler and a lower order batsman, imagine if they'd gone for him instead of hauritz on the '04 tour. his bowling should never be seen again.

In regard to the Cameron White debate, i think Australia missed out on a very handy all-rounder in him by trying to tamper his natural style of bowling, i think its fair enough now to say that he's just a batsman who bowls top-spinners mixed with a few wrong'un' with shocking lack of accuracy, but he was going nicely in his first few seasons but then some spin-gurus decided they need to improve his leggies and that pretty much ruined any potential that was there in his bowling.

that was probably that genius terry jenner, who apart from shane warne has produced nothing.

to be fair he didn't have a lot to work with

White has 170 odd FC wickets to his name and a good chunk of them came in the first half of his domestic career, so obviously he was doing was something right then, without even spinning the ball a mile.

Must have got a lot of those 170 wickets in England, because I don't remember him getting that many in Australia.

Johnson
Siddle
Bollinger
Hauritz

That should be our line up for the Sydney test, and when Clark comes back, he will probably take over Siddle or Bollinger, and then Lee will probably return after taking bags of wickets in first class cricket. Hilfenhaus is also in the mix.
Right on.

170 first class cricketers have since hung themselves on the way back to the pavillion.

sachin tendulkar has more potential as a bowler.

Not after he's hung himself.

Sachin has been out to White a couple of times.

With regard to White bowling record, most of his wickets came in England. Says more about how poor some English domestic batsmen are playing spin, then anything else.

the one that michael clarke took 6/9 on, you can't really compare a performance on that pitch with say, anything else
I see. Well, I'd say you can fairly accurately state that Hauritz's bowling was the biggest factor in Australia losing that game.

2-80 or whatever he got were truly woeful figures on a pitch like that. And he only got 3-16 or whatever in the first-innings by cleaning-up the tail.

White has taken 35 wickets at 39.37 in England. Between 2000/01 and 2003/04 he took 69 wickets at 33.10 in Australia; since 2004/05 he's taken 53 at 43.77.

White (as a bowler) was never all that good, but he was definately better than he is now at one point.

On topic. Well firstly we need to establish what the best Australian XI should be once all are fit should look like. Once Lee & Watson are fit, i reckon that should be:

Katich
Hayden/Jaques
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Watson
Haddin
Lee
Johnson
Krejza
Clark

I would give the spinners position to Krejza, because given that Clark could be depended on to be the Ponting goee's to for control at least for another 2 years & Watson is likely be more of a Flintoff type of a bowler of between 2001-2004. I think i would want my spinner to be an attacking option along with Johnson & Lee.

Nah, he's been utterly gash over here. Season-by-season record. 20 @ 32.75 in 2007 is flattering beyond all reason. Could barely hit the cut strip in the games (admittedly one dayers) I saw him in.
