Composite XI's and hypothetical match-ups ...

I think those are very balanced sides, especially if you look at the power of the five man attack of Team B. The accuracy provided by Ambrose, Mcgrath and Hadlee would be quite a treat.

As opposed to the wayward, inept pie-chucking from Wasim Akram, Dennis Lillee, Malcolm Marshall and Muttiah Muralitharan?

Anyway Team A is too strong batting-wise, yeah. I think bowling is balanced.

Team A

1. Sir Jack Hobbs
2. Sunil Gavaskar
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Sir Vivian Richards
6. Sir Garfield Sobers
7. Adam Gilchrist
8. Wasim Akram
9. Dennis Lillee
10. Malcolm Marshall
11. Muttiah Muralitharan

Team B

1. Matthew Hayden
2. Barry Richards
3. Sir Don Bradman
4. Brian Lara
5. Graeme Pollock
6. Kumar Sangakkara (wk)
7. Imran Khan
8. Sir Richard Hadlee
9. Shane Warne
10. Curtly Ambrose
11. Glenn Mcgrath

Who would win, in your opinion?
Pretty even actually. Marshall aside, I reckon team B have a stronger bowling attack. Any criteria that I've missed here, or is this just a random mix?

Assuming each player plays at the level he played at his peak, Team A by a miniscule margin.

Excellent lineups though. Thought-provoking.

Alrighty, a current Northern V Southern Hemisphere 3 match Test series

Northern

Sehwag - Has many critics, but 2008 form & overall test record speaks for itself
Gambhir/Strauss - Hard to separate these two, both had cracking years
Chanderpaul - Arguably the no.1 test batsmen
Tendulkar - His eye may not be what it once was, but mentally as strong as ever
Pietersen/Jayawardene- Another tough call, both had great years & both top class
Bravo -Not a great 2008, but for me an underrated allrounder & adds balance to any side
Flintoff-Still one of the top 3 all-rounders in the world
Dhoni (wk & c)- Just pips Sangakkara who hasn't been keeping of late
Sidebottom/Mendis - May just go with Mendis ahead of Sidey with Bravo in the side
Sharma/Khan - Hard to separate, probably go for Sharma
Murali - Still seems to pick up wickets at will

Southern

Smith (c) -Enough said as a player or captain
Katich -Seems so comfortable with his game right now
Ponting - Still a class-act, despite his lack of runs in India
Kallis - Terrible 2008 by his own standards, still top bat & more than useful bowler
de Villiers/Clarke Really tough call, probably toss a coin on this one
Prince/Duminy Despite Duminy's recent heroics, Prince had an amazing year
Oram Miserly Oram adds great depth to the sides batting & bowling
Haddin/Boucher/McCullum (wk) Really tough, could be convinced either way
Vettori Easily the best slow-bowler (don't really consider him a spinner) in the South
Johnson Pretty self-explanatory really, seems to improve every match & top no.10
Steyn No justification required

Lee, O'Brien & Ntini all have fairly decent cases for the third seamer's spot. 12 months ago BLee would've been a banker, but no more.

Would take the NH fairly comfortably tho.
BB, any changes to those sides a month down the track?

Assuming this is an All-time ODI team, because Jayasuriya wouldn't make an All-time Asian Test team.

And for the matter, Dravid wouldn't make the ODI lineup

well, i am choosing jayasuriya over sehwag, hanif, anwar and, possibly, merchant because he is fast scoring (like sehwag) and left handed (like anwar) to compliment the right handed defensive gavaskar. he can also turn his arm around in case you needed a sixth bowler. he can be the second spinner the team might need on crumbling wickets. this team can bat well and truly till no.8, even the no.9 is a double century scorer, so jayasuriya can really be flashy and aggressive without a worry.

So are you saying its a test team then

Sehwag craps all over Jayasuriya as Test opener, with all due respect to the latter. It isn't worth devaluing an opening spot to accomodate a batsman at 8. I'd drop Jayasuriya, make Sehwag open, and replace Kapil with a spinner if the pitches demanded.

agree. but this gives me a much better balance for the bowling attack. If I take sehwag in, I'll have to drop waqar for a spinner like bedi, chandra or kumble. (I wont choose waqar over kapil in case you are wondering; or qadir over the three spinners i've mentioned above)
