Daniel Vettori vs Richard Hadlee (batting)

imo he gets very little curve. Nathan Hauritz gets more.

Honestly he gets a huge number of wickets from batsmen playing down the wrong line, despite imparting less sideways movement on the ball, both in the air and off the pitch, than almost any specialist spinner I can recall. Almost invariably these batsmen are being beaten on the "wrong" edge for a left-arm orthodox bowler- i.e. the ball has turned less than expected.
Understand what your getting at & you're right about him getting close to zero turn, but think your under-estimating his ability to defeat batsmen in the air. If it was that simple to play him just like a straight bowler, batsmen would have that worked that out & would handle him with ease.

Despite the fact he never seems to rip through quality sides (even on 4th & 5th days) due to his lack of turn, he is quite unique in the respect that he's almost equally effective on ANY type of wicket or on any day since he relies on beating batsmen in the air & not off the pitch.

Are you saying you normally post without thinking?
Haa good one unlce. No well i'm not sure personally whose batting to rate higher ATM. I have not seen Hadlee bat live, but based on what i've read & limited old footage he looked a better player. But Vettori's batting these days is really gone to a new level. So need to deliberate some more..

Classic case of judging a batsman by how elegant he looks at the crease.

Batting is about scoring runs. A good technique is one that is successful.

At no point in his career did Hadlee bat at the level Vettori has for the last few years. Atm you expect Vettori to average around 40, carry a lot of batting responsibility and make centuries when set.

I said earlier in this thread that I can understand people taking either side of this debate, but I think it's now getting to the point where Vettori is clearly, and comfortably, in front.

Think what Volts says is fair, but also shows the dangers of judging players' overall worths whilst they're still playing. Paddles's record is set in stone, Danny's is obviously on a big upswing just now but could go back the other way too. Doesn't seem likely given the nuggety, dogged, etc nature of his batting, but you never know with sport.

Which is why we watch it, I suppose.

Vettori's 5 centuries to Hadlee's 2 (from only 10 extra tests) is probably already enough for me to give it to Vettori, even if he starts to drop off.

Yup, Hadlee would be considered a much better all-rounder had he ended with 4-5 hundreds and averaged over 30 with the bat
