Duleep Trophy query

What are the odds of an associate national team being invited to participate in the Duleep trophy as the 5th side and would such a scheme be beneficial to those involved?

Not sure of the odds, but i've suggested the idea on other forums and I do think this should be considered by the BCCI/ICC or whoever else is involved. I'm sure Bangladesh, Kenya, or an A side from around the world could come in and participate in this tournament. Perhaps even the regular Ranji trophy as well.

The touring side in the Duleep Trophy has often been a reserve team of a Test nation or an associate team. However, the visiting team has often been so weak that the idea has had to be thought of again. We've seen it misused by the associations sending these teams- England, the first to send a team here, sent an Academy XI that wasn't even as strong as a Zonal XI without the stars. While not really Associates, Test minnows Zimbabwe and Bangladesh sent their Second XIs, because of which there were several one-sided matches with these teams getting thrashed. That prompted a review of this idea, and the BCCI even thought of playing a National Cricket Academy XI instead of these teams, but got back to inviting visiting teams. It got sorted out with Sri Lanka A and England Lions arriving in full strength.

This is a good thing for the associates, no doubt, but we'd expect they take it a lot more seriously and send their top teams for the tournament.

Sri Lanka A should play as regular side every year, or just rename them Colombo. Only side that takes this tournment seriously. We are still the number minnow in the world and we should get first dibs. Once we get to being Test class then the other minnows can get a chance.

Last time they went in to the final. A better team selection would have got SL A with a draw. One or two matches should be played in Colombo as well IMO.

Then when they become good enough the ICC can grant them Test status.
