How bad are the Windies

Edwards and Taylor really impress me, Powell is far too hit and miss to ever be very good. One more bowler and West Indies will be a cricket force again IMO.
Need one more bowler, an opener and a wicketkeeper. It's a lot of holes to plug but they do have the makings of a good team if everything goes right.

I think Chanderpaul could easily land a spot in almost any batting lineup, save maybe India and Australia.
Seeing as he's the best batsman in the world at the moment, you'd think so.

Could maybe say the same about NZ, minus wicketkeeper and bowler, but plus a middle order bat.

Chattergoon is a good opener. Ramdin can keep quite well and his batting is also improving.

Low opinion of New Zealand then as WI batting is horrible.
IMO, West Indies have two quality batsmen, Sarwan and Chanderpaul (obviously in a different league to Sarwan). I'm not a fan of Gayle, and the others, Marshall, Chattergoon, Runako M****n vary between pure balls and unproven. Bravo's a good all-rounder, i'm a fan of his.

New Zealand have noone. Their most talented batsmen, Ryder, McCullum, Taylor, barely score any runs and the man who scores most regularly bats at 8. I'll be very surprised if How makes an international cricketer unless he develops some form of back foot game. Redmond is a failed legspinner and has done nothing to suggest he might be any good before yesterday. Flynn looks like a battler but has horrible luck. Give me Chanderpaul and Sarwan any day.

Take it you aren't a fan?

Think the Windies in NZ should be a good series, myself. NZ wickets should help the Windies bowlers like Taylor & Edwards who swing it a bit, so that might even out whatever advantage NZ have in that area.

Chanderpaul to remain not out throughout tho, obv.

Has there been a worse test cricketer this century?

The thing about Edwards is he hasn't been good for long enough to tell whether it was a one-off peak in form or he's really improved. Taylor's been steadily improving since his debut though, good player. Should certainly be an interesting series.

Chanders is the best batsman in the world for me. I wonder how many n/os he had Vettori will get between them.

i'm not an edwards fan at all, sure he's improved, but so he should, he keeps getting picked and keeps getting the new rock, just because he's quick doesn't mean he should just get shoehorned in there.

there was a similar bowler who played some county cricket and state cricket for WA in the 90's some of you might remember Duncan Spencer, same small build and slinging action, whom i've been told by someone who played with him that he was the quickest thing he'd ever faced, including a young brett lee. Didn't last though, way too erratic, had an interesting run in with a young ricky ponting once too

Grant Bradburn, IMO.
now there's a name :o

that fat barmy army looking cvnt from england ronnie irani was undeserving of anything other than drinking records, he was dead set ordinary, some of the english selectors from the past 20 years need their pensions cut.

Irani was a decent ODI player, sadly his best days as a batsman came when he was out of the England side (coinciding with stopping bowling due to injury) when he absolutely dominated domestic attacks in both forms of the game. Was never good enough in either discipline to make a real go of Test cricket, technically found out with the bat and a holding bowler with the ball on the right surfaces.

I am actually quite optimistic for this current WI side, whether they actually go on and fulfil the potential and build on the experience they are gathering, remains to be seen.
The bowling attack will be a handful for NZ, Jerome Taylor is finding a little more consistency while I hope there is more to come from Fidel Edwards. His pace and swing will trouble batsman, and while he will leak runs, his wicket-taking value is still present.

Daren Powell must gain more control. Can bowl in the high 80's (mph) but must regularly hit that back of a length to make him a more difficult proposition, and with Bravo, who offers control, it's not the worst attack around. The lack of a quality spinner still hinders them.

The batting lies heavily on Chanderpaul, everyone is aware of that, and he carries it very well. Top class. Sarwan and Gayle are also more than useful, but more consistent contributions from the rest is necessary. I would personally employ two all-rounders (ie Hinds.R. and Bravo) to give the batting a bit of depth, ultimately having Ramdin come in at 8. Decent keeper for me.

i'm tipping taylor (ross) and ryder to take the west indies quicks to the cleaners.

wonder what random spinner the windies will dish up this year

Yes, think there is only Sulieman Benn, in terms of specialist spinners, for the Test series in NZ. But I'm sure in 2009 they will use a further half a dozen.
