South African Domestic Season 2008/9

Wow some finish at Potch. 3 wickets in the last over for Langeveldt and after the Lions needed only 2 off 3 balls, he gets two wickets and the Lions can only draw.

Cobras 154/6 (JP 56, Nel 1/16, Alexander 2/30) drew with the Lions 154/6 (Virus 61, Neil Mac 35, Langeveldt 3/21)
Langers does it again! He did it for SA and also against the Warriors in the 2nd last over getting 2 wickets in the over. They were on target to win that match. He likes taking wickets in his last over.

He commentated last season too. Seems to like it here.
It is the first time I've watched Pro20 with English speaking commentators. I usually get Afrikaans commentary but in China you have carte blanche selection. :)

Annoying that some guy in China can get the cricket and I have to tell the eejit downstairs to stop watching SABC 1 on the decoder..

Going to the Warriors game tonight, look out for two drunkards in SA shirts on the grass bank under the main grandstand blowing vuvuzelas

Enjoy but SuperSport are in Centurion for the Titans v Eagles.

As for your game, the Warriors welcome back Johan Botha and Ashwell Prince. Decent bowling attack now for the Warriors, Tsotsobe, Theron, Parnell, Botha and Robbie P.

Titans 154/4 (Snijman 54, Behardien 35, du Preez /15) beat the Eagles 153/6 (Elgar 47, van der Merwe 2/27, Albie Morkel 2/33) by 6 wickets

Pretty poor standard of cricket in this game, the Eagles playing on the Highveld with 52 meter boundaries should have scored at least 180, especially as the Titans bowled some real filth.

The Titans can still make the playoffs if the Eagles lose their last 20/20 game by a considerable margin. Both sides are on the same points (8) but the Eagles are ahead on run-rate and have one more game to play on the weekend.

Blow for the Titans however could be the injury to Martin van Jaarsveld; it looked like he dislocated his shoulder whilst in the field and was unable to bat in their innings.

Warriors 127/6 (Botha 44*, Alexander 3/14) beat the Lions 123/5 (VB van Jaarsveld 40*, Robbie P 2/20) by 4 wickets

The Warriors have qualified. The Lions need to win their last game with a bonus point against the Dolphins at Kingsmead on Sunday and hope the Warriors beat the Eagles at Bloemfontein to stand any chance of making the playoffs.

Dolphins 117/2 (HD 34, Rowley 33*) beat the Lions 112/8 (Vilas 55*, Abdulla 3/28, Louw 2/13) by 8 wickets

Warriors 149/5 (Prince 46, Thyssen 41*, du Preez 2/21) beat the Eagles 131/7 (Elgar 28, Botha 1/17) by 18 runs

Good return from Ashwell. It was his first game back from injury and he made a valuable score at a good pace after the Warriors had a terrible start (3 down for 13 of 5 overs). The Warriors will only get stronger as they can now welcome back Kallis and Ntini. They started their Pro20 campaign with de Bruyn opening the bowling and amateur spinners making up the numbers but they could end it with an attack of Ntini, Tsotsobe, Parnell, Theron, Botha, Kallis and Robbie P.

The Warriors are joined in the playoffs by the Dolphins, who welcomed back Hashim Amla yesterday, the Cobras and the Eagles.

It was a poor outing from the Lions yesterday as they were comprehensively beaten. They are struggling to field a competitive side due to injuries to Kruger and Vandiar but one plus would be the emergence of Craig Alexander, who is bowling extremely quickly at the moment. He touched 150kph yesterday and naturally bowls big out-swing. If they can get Kruger fit, a SuperSport attack of Nel, de Wet, Kruger and Alexander is pretty good.

1st Playoff...

D/L 14 overs a side.

Eagles 105/1 (Human 53*) beat the Warriors 100/6 (Kreusch 30, McLaren 2/17) by 9 wickets (11 balls to spare)

Graeme Smith back tonight for the Cobras against the Dolphins. Very strong top orders for both sides, the Cobras have Smith, Gibbs and JP whilst the Dolphins have Jayasuriya, Hashim and HD. Hashim Amla is likely to keep wicket as well tonight when Daryn Smit comes onto bowl his leggies and that should be interesting to watch.

Dolphins 162/5 (HD 62, Jaya 41) beat the Cobras 148/9 (Levi 48*, Smith 32, Abdulla 3/14) by 14 runs

Captain Smith seemed to come through the game ok but his side was already down and out before he even faced a ball, as Yusuf Abdulla took 2 wickets in his first 5 balls and got Gibbs with an inswinger which was as plumb as it gets.

Also decent game back for Jayasuriya. He played for Sri Lanka on the Wednesday and on Friday he is in Cape Town smashing Rory Kleinveldt all over the place and getting two wickets in his first over.

JJ Pienaar currently has 4/21 off 6.1 for Easterns and is boasting some List A stats of 32 wickets at 15.21 - certainly one for watch.

Amateur cricket... Virus, Kuhn, Tahir all played it this week and tore it up. Virus got a career best with the bat whilst Tahir got 10 wickets, I believe.

Never seen Pienaar but his 23 and the other 'King' of Easterns cricket, all-rounder, David Wiese played a few games for the Titans this year and he was awful. Looked like a very poor man's Rikki Clarke.

2nd Playoffs

Cobras 191/4 (Gibbs 92, Smith 33, Alfonso Thomas 2/28) beat the Dolphins 59/5 (Hashim 23, Telemachus 2/8) by 38 runs (D/L)

Warriors 117/8 (Prince 40, CJ de Villiers 4/14) Eagles 2 – No Result

Wonderful innings from Gibbs but Yusuf Abdulla, the hero from the Newlands on Friday night became the villain today after dropping a sitter in the outfield. Good innings also from the Captain, looked good as did Hashim Amla in his brief innings.

Impressive figures from CJ de Villiers again. CJ is built in the mould of Morne Morkel minus the real pace but he has proven to be real handful of late. He should be in the South African A side to face Australia.

Cobras face the Dolphins again on Wednesday in the 3rd Playoff at Kingsmead and as it stands at 1-1; the winner will go the final and thus the Champions League.

The Warriors are currently 1-0 down to the Eagles with one more to play so even if they win they might not get through to the final…

I always suspected but never confirmed that such cricket was extremely low in quality but thanks for the confirmation.

The Warriors and Eagles 2nd game is to be played again today. If the Eagles win, then they are into the final and the Champions League. Thus no 3rd playoff game on Wednesday will be needed.

Yeah the standard is poor and the only equilibrium in playing on 3 day result wickets is that batsman playing amateur cricket very rarely have insane batting averages. Richard Levi of the Cobras franchise did have a 90 average for Western Province a while back but he was too good and promptly made the step up. The downside to that of course is you can get guys averaging 15 with the ball in first class cricket who will never play professional cricket.
