Ponting certainly had problems with Chawla.

Does anyone else think that Ponting has to be a bit wary of the Ishant threat ?
I actually think he may trouble Ponting than the spinners.

To be fair to Ponting, he batted excellently but made one mistake to a very good delivery. Before that, he hadnt looked like getting out

As for Ishant, this is a very important series for him. ATM, his career reputation is based on a great spell to an out of form Ponting and a couple of ODI performances. Other than that, he's been very ordinary and IMO shoulg be rated well behind a guy like Morkel

Will they call up a replacement?

If not, I'd go as far as saying Krezja is the least deserving cricketer to play for Australia in the last twenty or so years.
Casson is likely to be called up as a replacement for McGain, and if i were an Aussie selector i would send him to India ASAP, so he can get into some sort of a shape to play in the first test.

Really disappointed with the Aussie batting effort, i expected Haydos, Punter and Clarke to get out there and get a few runs under their belt so they can go into the first test with some confidence, but that didn't happen, it seems like Ponting was batting well but just got out to a good ball, but i am pleased to see Hussey and Haddin making some runs and more importantly spending some time out their in the middle.

Anyways this game has been a very good workout for the Australians so far and good preparation for them before the first test.

Great to see Hussey in the runs - need a big series from him.

And pup, you can't call Casson straight into the side after three months with no cricket. That's just suicide (and not of the Kaz variety). Pick four seamers and be done with it IMO.

Nice work by the lower order to give BP11 a 400+ score!!!! .... Pathan shows what a decent all-rounder can do in a line up .... hope he gets selected for the last two tests :)

Nah, Australian fans always overreact massively, and Clapo is right. Yeah, we have no spin options, stop the press...

What else is terrible about the current squad and warrants doom and gloom, exactly? The batting is world class, and we have two top quality quicks ATM, and Johnson who's been part of the team for the last 12 months, so nobody can exactly be shocked at his inclusion.

Yep, we have no spinners. We had a totally untried "maybe" legspinner who is now injured, and now we have a bunch of different totally untried spin options with poor FC records, or the option of going in with four quicks. That's exactly how it's been since the end of the last Ashes series, and probably how it will be for a while to come.

MacGill was pretty awesome in his day, to be fair. Didn't expect him to fail so badly and retire so soon.

Exactly

There is ZERO point in playing somebody who is well below test class just for the sake of variety and particularly when all the stats prove that virtually no foreign spinner has done well in India anyway

Play your best players and if they play to their ability, Australia wins far more than they lose.

It really is as simple as that

I'm not overly opposed to playing an untried spinner, actually. Especially with Watson in the squad as a 4th seam option and the support spin of Clarke, it seems like a reasonable choice. And both Krezja and Casson can bat pretty well, which is a plus.

Playing four quicks has its advantages as well, but what happens if you end up with a huge turner? Our spin options aren't great but I'd still prefer to have one in the 4th innings on a turning wicket than not.

I do think the spinner they picked is a somewhat odd choice, but I don't object to the logic. If they bowl poorly we do have other options, at least.

I hate the post I'm just about to make, but I've thought about it all day, and I'd go with this team:

1. Hayden
2. Jaques
3. Ponting
4. Hussey
5. Clarke
6. Katich
7. Haddin
8. Lee
9. Johnson
10. Clark
11. Bollinger

It's really hard for me to post that, as I've ferociously supported both Krejza and Watson throughout their careers. They're two of my favourite players really.

However, Krejza simply isn't good enough at the moment. Unless the pitch looks like it's going to turn absolutely square from the first day and be low and slow for the quicks, he should not be in the team. I'm against the idea of stacking the batting and using Watson as one of the four main bowlers for reasons I outlined earlier in this thread, so that leaves the four specialist quicks option. Given that, I don't think Watson would offer much with the ball in India as a fifth seamer - Michael Clarke would be bowled more than him and possibly even Katich as well in the second innings. I don't think Watson is quite good enough on batting alone to get in over Katich or Jaques at the moment so the team is as it stands above.

I'd actually be thrilled if Watson and Krejza played TBH as I'm big fans of both of them, but if I was selecting the team myself, I wouldn't pick them at this stage.

What do you think of using Bracken as an option on particularly big turning pitches? Hypothetical of course, since he's not in the squad somehow, but still.

Bracken was my second seamer picked for this tour, TBH. Definitely would have played him. Not to be though.

They could, perhaps, dispense with Ponting in favour of Watson. Since the former apparently is only going to average about 10.
