Battle of the bits-and-pieces players

Alex Wharf was picked as a specialist bowler on the back of one outstanding performance of 6/8 or something at domestic level UIMM - I don't think his batting factored in to why he was picked.
I could be wrong, but I'm sure I can recall Big Dunc speaking of his batting in positive terms & he liked his multi-dimensionals, did Fletcher.

Perhaps you're right, but he batted 10 behind Giles and Kabir Ali and opened the bowling.

England are going to clean up here.

All of the current Essex lower order applies to this:

Graham Napier
James Middlebrook
Tim Phillips
Alex Tudor
Ryan ten Doeschate
and even Andre Adams and Ronnie Irani when they played.

None of them are good enough to be selected as 'bowlers' alone (Tudor these days more so than in the past) but because they can all bat fairly well, they all get selected.

It also helps that Essex don't have any proper bowlers other than who they've imported this week.

Oh - and how's about Paul Grayson (I believe he played a one dayer against Zimbabwe once!)

Fairly certain that RTD is selected for his batting talent.
Maybe for Holland...

He's the only doubt on that list though - when he was originally signed for Essex, it was certainly as an all-rounder, but his bowling rapidly regressed whilst his batting improved.

Was more than a bit tongue-in-cheek actually. He's not that bad though.

8-) at this thread and some of the posts in it.

This is an absolutely terrible thread, some of the players that have been classified as 'bits and pieces', well, I can't beleive it. I'm wondering whether it's even worth trying to make a point about guys like Zander de Bruyn and Ryan Hinds, who are both quality batsman and definitely not 'bits and pieces'. Ridiculous.

He's tearing it up with both bat and ball for Fardingham at the moment. Surely not bits 'n' pieces?!?
