Battle of the bits-and-pieces players

NZTailender

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
IMO,any player who is not capable of making a top quality side on the basis of one of the two main disciplines & plays as an "allrounder" is a bits & pieces player. Some of them are:

Shahid Afridi
Irfan Pathan
Shoaib Malik
Abdur Razzaq
Manoj Prabhakar
Azhar Mahmood
Andrew Hall
Adam Hollioake
Mark Ealham
Liam Plunket
Shane Watson
Ian Bravo
Ajit Agarkar

Farveez Maharoof
Jacob Oram

and most of Bangladeshi & some other players.
Bolded those I disagree with.

Shoaib Malik is a pretty darn good batsman for mine. Bowling a bonus.

Liam Plunkett is someone who is picked to be a bowler.

Shane Watson has an extremely good technique and is a fine batsman in his own right.

Ian Bravo? I had to do a search which found nothing but I assume you mean Dwayne Bravo? If so you're again mistaken. All-rounder he is, IMO, bits and pieces? No.

Ajit Agarker & Farveez Maharoof: see Liam Plunkett

Jacob Oram I might've agreed with you a few years ago, but of late he's become an extremely valuable all-rounder.

I'm not quite sure what Pathans EXACT role in the side is but I'm pretty sure he is also picked mainly for bowling.

People like Chris Harris, James Hopes and Luke Wright are bits and pieces players. They usually bat lower order (but sometimes open) and aren't the best batsman in the side, nor are they the best bowler and often bowl 5th or so.

Exactly.

The funny thing is are you meant to pick the best player in the battle or the best at being a bits and peices cricketer? lol.

Agarkar,Pathan,Maharoof & Bravo are picked these days(whenever they are selected) as allrounders but the first three used to be picked as bowlers in start of their careers.I've heard people like Chetan Sharma,Arun Lal,Maninder Singh,Laxman Shivramakrishan & Ravi Shastri(during commentary/cricket shows) & some people linked to BCCI saying that Pathan & Agarkar are picked as allrounders.

Shoaib Malik has a worst FC record and has played only one test innings of note until now.

Then who exactly is a bits & pieces player.Anyone plays as an allronder and is useless & of no good to his team is a bits & pieces player in my books.

Definitely not useless to their teams.

This is my first attempt at starting one. They appear useless, but sometimes come useful in a match. Let's make the list. There may be some gems in these.
  1. James Hopes
  2. Shane Lee
  3. Ian Harvey
  4. Matthew Fleming
  5. Dougie Brown
  6. Ronnie Irani
  7. Adam Hollioake
  8. Dermot Reeve
  9. Dmitri Mascarenhas
  10. Abid Ali
  11. Roger Binny
  12. Andre Adams
  13. Azhar Mahmood
  14. Zander de Bruyn
  15. Justin Kemp
  16. Dilhara Lokuhettige
  17. Hashantha Fernando
  18. Gayan Wijekoon
  19. Dwayne Smith
  20. Darren Sammy
  21. Ryan Hinds
More to come.

Edit: Added a few
Ryan Hinds has an outstanding record with the bat. He's a batsman who bowls sometimes. He's neither bits-and-pieces nor useless. I also rate de Bruyn.

Indeed. And for a batsman who bowls sometimes, he a bloody good First Class record with the ball too.

His limited Test opportunities and the fact that West Indies inexplicably batted him at 9 throughout his ODI career are clouding people's judgement. It'd be like calling Thilan Samaraweera a bits-and-pieces player.

Andre Adams was a specialist bowler as well TBF. The fact that he could bat a bit does not change what he was selected as.
