Out of those Gavaskar and Sehwag. But If I was naming an alltime indian team like in the other thread my openers would be Gavaskar and Merchant.

Had to set up an elligibity criteria for initial screening...Merchant is unlucky not to have played many matches...

OK then the 1 winner from this poll gets selected...The first runner up in this poll will be pitted against Vijay Merchant in another poll on popular demand...If everyone is OK with this idea...So, the two openers will be the winner of this poll and one between the first runner-up and Vijay Merchant (decided by another poll)...

Is this idea OK with all?

Can't SS add him to this poll, and put back Sehwag to zero?

Putting back Sehwag to zero will create a lot of confusion to many voters...Better we'll create another poll after some days...I am sure that won't take any extra time as that poll will run in parallel with the 4th bowler poll and other polls...

There's no harm in providing extra options...If none votes then automatically they become invalid...However, the larger the option pool is given, the better it becomes a 'voters' team' than an 'option provider's team'...That's why not only in openers' poll but also in other polls I have provided with more than sufficient options...Even when some demand some others outside the options like Merchant, Nissar and Amar Singh should have been in contension, I have assured them that those players will also get their chances...

someone would say why not list all those who opened for Ind and why set up a 30 innings criteria, why not 20

and why miss out on Shastri, who was one of the successful openers overseas in the early 90s .... you took all the trouble to dig up stats of Das, Jaffar, Prabhakar and Ramesh but missed on on someone like Shastri, who has hit big 100s in places like Australia and Eng from what i recall from the top of my head

When you set an elligibility criteria, it will always be possible to get a player who doesn't meet the criteria but is better than someone who meets the criteria...unless your elligibility criteria is in the form of a complicated ranking...And if it is in the form of a ranking and you know for sure who are your better players then why bother to have a poll?...

In simpler words, I didn't publish a list of best Indian test openers...I published a list of those players who played enough innings in that position for others to form an opinion about them...We have big enough sample size for these openers to say if they were good or bad...For others the sample size isn't big enough to form a conclusive opinion about them in either way...

I am voting for Engineer to partner Gavaskar because I'll choose him as the wicket-keeper anyway...plus him opening makes an extra slot for a middle-order batsman to come in...

Utterly absurd frankly that every single name on this list other than Gavaskar is considered more worthy than Vijay Merchant simply because India had more Tests scheduled in their day.

Contractor and Sidhu were decent Test batsmen but they weren't even close to Merchant's class.

No, every single name on this list is not considered more worthy than Merchant...As I have stated in my earier post, I haven't listed the best Indian openers, but I have listed those openers who have played enough for others to form opinion about them (either good or bad)...However, as I have stated earlier, Merchant will get a chance to compete against the first runner-up of this poll in a separate poll (on popular demand)...So, nothing to worry about...

yep, and thats why this poll sucks with players like Merchant and Shastri out while Jaffar and Das are in

clearly, there are 3 guys in the top bracket, i.e. Gavaskar, Sehwag and Merchant .... followed by effective openers like Sidhu, Shastri, and so on .... and definitely not guys like Jaffar, Das and company

only if common sense had prevailed than focus on number of innings played when doing this poll, it would be have been interesting .... i guess, i ll pass this poll
