Nah, Symcox had retired by the 1999/2000 series. Believe it or not, the spinner they used in the First Test was Clive Elksteen. Boje played as well, though, and in the Second Test too. In fact it's not entirely true that seam was the biggest player in the victory - Boje, in fact, did well in both Tests and played as big a part as Donald, Pollock and Kallis in the victory.

In 1996/97 it was McMillan, Symcox and Adams then two from three (each played two Tests) of Donald, de Villiers and Klusener.

Cool, so we can't rule out that I'm not Test class? :p

You get my point though, you obviously can.
Well, not really. Clinton Perren was never a 'flahy' or 'classy' player, but, after his early troubles he was a very consistent batsmen, and even got Pura Cup player of the year. We will never really know if he would have been good at tests or not.

Obviously there are some players, who don't even have their name mentioned within a suburb of selection meetings, but players like McGain you're not really going to know unless they play a test. You can presume or guess, but you'll never really know until they play a test. Same case as Beau Casson really.

If they're nothing flash at lower levels, then you can pretty safely assume that they're not going to be anything flash at higher levels. Makes sense, no? There's little logic behind saying 'you're not really going to know unless they play a test', yes you will, by a wealth of first class evidence. It's not two different games or formats we're talking about here.

It's fairly obvious what I was saying Gelman. Players who aren't even thought about when it comes to being selected aren't going to be viewed as test class. However, someone like McGain who is on the brink of selection you're not really going to know if their test quality until they play a test.

Why not? It's more an indictment on the shallowness of the Australian reserves if anything. The fact someone is currently the best spinner in Australia doesn't mean they're close to Test class and this is something you can say pretty confidently without trying them out first.
