As Richard mentioned, I've heard really great things about Solkar. I know Tony Greig rates him as the best close in catcher he has ever seen, and so do most bowlers who played with him. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of his matches/catches, so I can't really judge.
That reminds me - Greig was a superb catcher himself, they said there was nothing to choose between him and Botham.

oh, hahahh i understand now.

symonds is the joke option.

Ok I take back what I said, well the 2nd best fielder apart from Symonds is Ponting, Rhodes probably 3rd.

For me, Jonty, Ponting and Symonds are all the same. I picked Ponting because I think his batting is so great it almost takes away from how good of a fielder he actually is. I've also seen more of him than the others so that's what is probably splitting them in my mind.

I have watched him, through his entire 26 Test career. He was miraculous.

What made him so very special was that he did not 'blink' so to say. He did not , on reflex, turn his body or head away as the batsman swung the bat in his direction as any normal person would in instinctive self preservation. This gave him that extra fraction of a second so vital to see where the ball was going if it didn't hit the middle of the bat. Yes it meant he was in grave danger if it WAS hit in the middle since he stood so bloody close.

He was lucky not to be killed. If he had played more than those 26 Tests he was more than likely to be grievously injured since he fielded without a helmet !

Not Terrible
Top Kiwi fielders today are the Marshall twins (half the time I think we play them just for the fielding), Vincent a run out specialist, Jeeves has caught a few crackers in his time and some of the safest hands in cricket today, Taylor he occassionally has mental farts in the field but he's done some spectacular fielding to date (e.g. the T20 against Australia when he caught a ball heading for six, turned through it back into the field because he was heading over the line himself all in a split second, saving valuable runs).

The lack of Harris love is also quite disturbing and if we are going for outfielding alone, the only person I can think who actually matches Symonds arm in the field is Cairns, rocket powered throws IMO.

Symonds is the best I've seen, Colly is good but Symonds is a class above.

Edit: Oh Nathan McCullum is practically a Marshall twin in the field.

Mark Waugh. I'd have him as Australia's best all round fielder since they started dominating in the 90s.

No Chris Harris... what a shame.. the irony is his odi career ended when fielding off his own bowling.. he landed on his shoulder in the cb series.. and never got selected to play for nz after the injury healed...

CCairns Runs Out D Jones. @ 3.20 rocket out field throw..
CHarris Runs out C McDerm.. @4.39 out field direct hit...

**CHarris also ran out DBoon off his own bowling.
NZ changed the landscape on fielding in this toournment..
