I've left out Asanka Gurusinghe from the 300 + list because his average was around 26, and made batting avg of 30 as the cut off.

I went for Ponting, but only because Richards could probably slot in at #5.

voted for Richards but would prefer him at #4 and someone like Martin Crowe at #3

Richards - only man who could deny Ponting this slot. Punter will have to go in at 4.

They have many very similar qualities, but I think Richards had many of them in greater abundance.

Furthermore, in this thread we're selecting people based on their WC performances and while Ricky's have been phenomenal, Richards were also. Richards scored his WC runs at a higher average and almost exactly identical strike rate, except Richards was playing in an earlier era of ODIs where it was generally a more even contest between bat and ball.

While it's Richards' batting alone that made me select him above Ponting anyway, its worth mentioning that he was also a useful enough spinner to be a sixth bowler if required, which is something Ponting doesn't haveas well as being a very very good fielder - probably not quite in Ponting's class, but by any normal standards excellent. 3 run-outs in a WC final works for me.

I'm definitely voting for Ponting at four if that makes you feel better! ;)

Fair enough then.

99*

International Debutant
1- Australian
2- Pompus *******.
3- Wins all the time.
4- Bats better than most people.
5- Thinks he's an umpire.
6- Has a hissy fit if anything doesn't go his way.
7- Australian.
8- Has the most annoying voice of any modern captain I watch.
9- Tasmanian
10- Australian
11- Thinks his team is immune to behaving like sportsmen, getting sledged and losing without some sort of luck playing part.
12- Takes credit where he doesn't deserve it.
13- Australian.
14- Wouldn't know what the 'Spirit of the Game' was if it came up to him and kicked him in the ****s.

Think that's most of it.
