Post WSC test cricket World XI

I’ve found an excellent article I came across where has selected a Test Match World XI based on players since the end of World Series Cricket, so essentially in the last 30 years.

He has written quite a bit about each player with career highlights, his own memories and thoughts and detailed justifications for each selection It’s a fantastic side IMO, well balanced and not full of cultural bias and other rubbish we are not interested in. Of course with articles and team selections like this there is always room for conjecture and discussion so it would be great to hear what everyone thinks and some of the selections they would have made with some detailed reasoning.

I don't see why you're so hostile...

The world XI is a good list...

Sunil Gavaskar
Matthew Hayden
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Steve Waugh
Adam Gilchrist
Wasim Akram
Malcolm Marshall
Shane Warne (c)
Glenn McGrath

Edit: nvm... Thestos is kurt rudder. agression permitted.

nice team Days of Grace, fitting both Warne and Murali into the same lineup makes for quite a team with 5 quality bowlers and just as much batting depth with the multiple allrounders. Very solid attack.

I don't rate Ponting's selection whatsoever but that's just my opinion. Once he proves he can bat in India against quality spinners then he would deserve a spot in the batting lineup. He was overawed by Harbhajan Singh last summer on our decks.

The batting looks a bit hmmmm with no specialists beyond number five. Gilchrist is really a number seven test batsman. But I can see the problem. Thats why Botham as an allrounder (or even Kallis) bolsters the batting a bit. Otherwise there are far too many stroke players and just Gavaskar for the 'stodgier' role.

I might try

  1. Gavaskar
  2. Greenidge/Ian Chappell
  3. Greg Chappell/Lara
  4. Richards
  5. Tendulkar
  6. Botham/Kallis
  7. Gilchrist
  8. Imran/Hadlee
  9. Warne
  10. Lillee
  11. Murali

I would have Lillee there before Wasim (or anyone else for that matter)

I might consider Kallis for Ponting, actually, due to your point about there being too many attacking batsmen.

Wasim gives your the left-hander variety. And he's the best swing bowler since the WSC started. Enough said.

Is the idea of taking players in their pick? Or, of taking their longetivity also into account?...As those two will result in two different World XI's...

Yes but once you bring Kallis and if you do not reduce a bowler, you actually have six bowlers. One to many I would think.
You might consider retaining Ponting (alongwith Kallis) and removing one of the newe ball bowlers. Considering your point regarding variation that a left armer provides, you would have to decide between Imran and Hadlee. A real tough choice. I would go for whoever I thought was the better bowler irrespective of batting since thats already bolstered. Its still a tough choice.

Since you have a left armer and Imran is essentially an in-swing bowler maybe you could consider Hadlee ... maybe...

some of you may recall that CW members selected a team for 1985-2005 era and one for 1965 - 1985. they were, IIRC

hayden
anwar
ponting
lara
tendulkar
imran
gilchrist
warne
ambrose
murali
mcgrath

and

gavaskar
greenidge
richards
chappell. g
sobers
botham
knott
hadlee
marshall
lillee
underwood

the post WSC team should be a combination these two (minus sobers who retired in '74)

Lillee is the greatest fast bowler ever but he wouldn't make a Post WSC XI unless his whole career is taken into account. I wouldn't choose Alan Knott for the same reason or consider Greg Chappell - though with Richards, Lara and Tendulkar the middle order picks itself.

1. Gavaskar
2. Greenidge
3. Richards
4. Tendulkar
5. Lara
6. Botham
7. Gilchrist
8. Hadlee
9. Marshall
10. Warne
11. Murali

I wrote the article......take the time to check out the link.......I put together an extensive archive of videos for each player as well.

Lillian Thomson makes a good point about the portion of their career within the time span......it had something to do with Lillee missing out on the final XI. I felt Gavaskar and Richards still achieved enough after WSC to get in the side.

Why is that? Half his career is played post WSC, and does roughly as well.
