Southern vs Northern Hemisphere

Instead of the World XI selections, how about a Southern Hemisphere vs Northern Hemisphere game....

....who would make the teams and who would win?

Pretty good, although if this is a ODI I would have McCullum in for Boucher and Bond ahead of all of them in any format if he was available. And I would leave vettori out if test match unless it was a turning track

Current, all-time, 1970-2001, 1930-current-day, 1900-1970, what-what-what?

And is the subcontinent defined as part of Cricket's Southern Hemisphere or is it purely 100% geographical in that the antipodes and South Africa alone are SH?

FWIW, I'd go, for a 1930-current-day NH (assuming England, West Indies and the subcontinent, and assuming UNCOVERED wickets)
Merchant
Sutcliffe (Hobbs played just the one year in the 1930s, and obviously he is possibly as obvious a selection as Bradman)
Headley
Hammond (c)
Sobers
Tendulkar
Imran Khan
Engineer \ Knott (w)
Marshall
Verity
Underwood

And SH:
Woodfull
Morris or maybe Richards (B)
Bradman
Pollock (G)
Chappell (G)
Miller
Gilchrist
Hadlee
Lindwall
Donald
Lillee

However, one could substitute in Grimmett, O'Reilly and Warne for any of the three specialist seamers and on uncovered wickets it would be unlikely to weaken the bowling.

No, no, no....its a current team along the lines of the ICC # 1 ranked vs World XI game that never lived up to the hype....at least players would still be having "Hemisphere" pride to fight for :)

Purely geographical......

Wow, the Northern Hemisphere selection is hard....too many good batsmen and not enough good pace bowlers...

....here's an attempt though

1. Cook
2. Sehwag
3. Dravid
4. Yousuf
5. Pietersen
6. Sangakkara +
7. Flintoff
8. Vaas
9. Sidebottom
10. Ahktar
11. Muralitharan

Reserves: Tendulkar, Younis, Flintoff, Kumble, Asif

Hmm, in that case... as I am a little boerd (sic)...

NH:
Vandort
Cook
Dravid
Tendulkar
Chanderpaul
Sangakkara (w)
Pietersen
Taylor
Sidebottom
Muralitharan
Mohammad Asif

SH:
Smith
Hayden
Ponting
Kallis
Hussey
Clarke
Haddin
Lee (B)
Clark
Steyn
Nel

And yes, fully aware that I've picked two players in there that couldn't 100% be currently said to be "Test players" (as Haddin STILL hasn't played and Nel is currently sidelined). I remain extremely confident they are the best players of their type currently. Poor old NZ - there's definately the chance that Taylor\Fulton\Southee\Hay might be in there in a few years' time, but sadly right now none make the grade compared to Aussies and Proteas.

How can you possibly pick Yousuf and Pietersen ahead of Tendulkar and Younis Khan? :-O Never mind Sidebottom and Vaas (or Shoaib or Murali FTM) over Asif? :-O

Well I said I was stuggling to sort out which batsmen to leave out....I did have Tendulker and Younis in the squad, however they'd likely replace Yousuf and Chanderpaul rather than Pietersen....Asif was also in my squad, so no problem dropping Vaas :)

Hmm... right this moment, Chanderpaul > Pietersen (though you didn't have Chanders in your original XI) IMO. It's only in the fact he's likely to be around rather longer in future that KPP has it over Shivna.

Would actually consider Chanders over Younis now I think about it, very much so in fact.

Not too happy with that NH one though, is just balanced terribly.

this is a nice idea .. but what works agianst it is logistic. I suspect by 2010-2011 they will have a super 20/20 comp maybe the top teams from each 20/20 domestic comp .. playing ..top club tournment..becuase of time factor it'll probably be a knock out comp.
