I think you will find most batsmen have simliar records to Ponting, Langer and Gilchirst home and away. Hussey, Symonds, Clarke and Jaques haven't really played enough cricket away from home. Hayden well we been through that. Just look at any Hayden v some average player thread.

What % of Tests did they play at home?

Hussey would have played many more at home, off the top of my head

Whatever it takes!!!

I think most of them play almost equal no. of games away from home too... Anyways, I tend to think it is the same for all teams and I guess Aussies are no exceptions.

I think the pecentage of games they are playing at home has a huge role in that and i think many other players from around the world too would have similar records, but that doesn't mean that the Australian batsmen are underperforming away from home or anything, anyways hasn't Clarke only tonned outside Australia once that too in his debut innings againat India at Banglore, rest of his 5 tons have come at home.

I think a lot has to do with the fact that Australia play so much more cricket at home! Otherwise, I can see no other reason...because its not like Aussies dont perform away from home! They thrash everyone regardless of whether its at home or away!

Hussey hasn't played many tests away yet.
Ponting does have 15 away tons, not like a dearth
Clarke has played more away than Hussey, but not that much yet.
Symonds - see Clarke.
Jaques - as you say, only one away test.

Langer and Hayden's records are the most compelling case for what you've put forward.
Given the stats of those two, it's little wonder home has been a fortress for Australia in the last decade or so.

Think the fact that Andrew Symonds has 2 Test centuries is more worthy of :blink:8-) than the home\away records of any Australian batsmen TBH.

Meh, you should know I'm not that far behind you in the Symonds-dislike, doubly so since he had about 5 let-offs in those 2 centuries.

Maybe so, but I dislike Shahid Afridi more than you dislike Symonds. Beat that.
I'd seriously give my little finger to have Symonds's Test career wiped from the records.

I think you under-estimate my dislike of the man - or rather, the player.

Yeah, but how much would you miss your little finger?

Offer us something substantial - maybe a kneecap - and I'll phone my people at the ICC and see what we can do

I'd very possibly do the same to have Afridi have never picked-up ball and bat. The man's caused damage to so much IMO. I can't speak of how much better we might've been without him.

This will bite you on the ass in 5 years time if he has 20 odd test tons

I think in my book this comes down to Australian pitches being the flattest ones around in the world. The bounce is consistent and the ball comes on to the bat, simply speaking if you get out on Australian pitches you only have yourself to blame. It does not come as a surprise to me that Australian batsmen have feasted in these conditions, largely because they have played a plethora of bowlers who were either incompetent or rendered unpenetrative as a result of the conditions. Not to take away from the quality of the list of players put up there, but the basic fact is that in the last decade there has been nothing in the pitches or the conditions(with the odd exception) to assist bowlers. As a result, the list of opposition bowlers with sub 30 averages in Australia during the last decade is comprised of:

TM Dilshan (SL) 2004-2004 2 1 2.0 0 4 2 2/4 2/4 2.00 2.00 6.0 0 0

Not a long list by any means, and most of it is filled with bowlers who are merely part timers or bowlers who had one miraculous day. Meanwhile the decent bowlers like Akram(55.00/wicket),Akthar(43.52), Pollock(46.68), Hoggard(45.31), Walsh(43.71), Vaas(42.25), Ntini(37.88), Kumble(37.73), Murali(61.88), Flintoff(32.88) have struggled considerably. I've heard many people refer to Pakistan as the graveyard for fast bowlers, yet its quite obvious to me that it is more the case for bowlers bowling in Australia.
