Can there be a cricket match without toss?

A quick look shows that the Deodhar Trophy games Ive found involve a toss.

Possibly a new rule, but has not been typical. More likely (IMO) a lack of information

There was once a game were one captain wanted to bat and another wanted to bowl so they decided to forget the toss. There was also a time were the coin had queen Victoria on one side and lady Brittania on the other and W.G said "The lady!"
