2nd spinner in tests for Ind

the fast bowling line up looks pretty settled in tests w/ lots of options but the 2nd spinner's position is up for grabs, imo

Bhajji is doubtful for the Ist test but even if he were available, i guess he has not been in the wkt-taking form of late .... Chawla is coming out as a promising option .... what are the other options?

Assuming that you have to pick two spinners, whom would you play as the 2nd spinner to partner Captain Kumble?

My vote goes to Chawla for a place at Chennai .... There is bounce in that pitch, if i m not wrong, with the ball turning a little sharper [unlike the pitch at A'bad where everything happens in a slow motion], his leg-spin could just be what doctored ordered for India

Hmm, Karthik or Powar I think. Chawla, IMO, is not yet ready.

Agree with Manan. ^^ Powar, or maybe even the much-maligned (by me) Murali Kartik.

    Chawla's 18, FFS.

In that he's currently not as good a bowler as Powar and Kartik. Regardless of what he might one day end-up being (and I'll indeed be disappointed if he doesn't end-up substantially better than both).

Harbhajan Singh. The next best option is Amit Mishra but he's a leggie. Next, you've got Kartik and Powar. Finally, Chawla and Ojha.

Given that none of them provide a great overall package and Sehwag is a very handy off-spinner, Kumble shouldn't be afraid of going in with a 3-1 attack if appropriate.

Swap Pathans for the all rounder spot for the SA series? Irfan does not have a good bowling record in home tests and SA seems like the team least vulnerable to any kind of pace bowling. Yusuf did reasonably well in the Ranji (with ball atleast as well as Chawla and better than Powar, going by the numbers and a couple of good batting knocks).

With Ganguly providing a third seaming option (and he did very well vs Pakistan), playing 2 seamers, 2 spinners and one spin bowling all rounder may be another way to go. (And at a stretch, that bowling all rounder could be Sehwag).

Havent seen YKP bowl, so dont know anything other than that he bowls off spin.

    So he is fit?

If he's available, it'd be plain mad to pick anyone instead of him. My previous post was made thinking Harbhajan had been ruled-out.

Definitely worth consideration given how incredibly good YKP has been over the past few seasons. Would you play Yusuf at 7 as an all-rounder or at 8 with 6 specialist batsmen in the side?

At #8, he'd have to make the grade as a specialist spinner. Dont think he is really ahead of almost anybody on your list a few posts above, and certainly behind Harbhajan & Kartik. So hard to see him in a side with 6 batsman + wk.

OTOH, he appears to score a 50+ innings with the bat in every third match in FC, which certainly speaks of true all rounder credentials. It is however a long shot thought, and I myself would probably go for 6 batsmen + 4 bowlers against any good test team with the intention of using Sehwag and/or Ganguly a lot with the ball.
