CRICKET: Nomads hit Chiefs in CK league

Story by RICHARD MWANGI
Publication Date: 6/25/2008
Northern Nomads enhanced their chances of lifting the Cricket Kenya Sahara Elite two day league when they beat Western Chiefs by nine wickets at the Ruaraka Sports Club on Sunday.

The Nomads’ captain, Thomas Odoyo, won toss and as expected put the Chiefs in to bat first on Saturday. The Chiefs batted under cloudy sky and chilly weather.

The game was delayed for two hours because of light drizzles which made it necessary for the wicket to be covered. When the game started the Chiefs were routed out for 77 runs.

The Nomads batted well and ended their innings with a relatively impressive score of 179 which gave them a first innings lead of 102.

Tight fielding

Shem Obado top scored with unbeaten 51 and shared an eighth wicket stand of 58 with Josephat Ababu (45).

In their second innings, the Chiefs’ they failed to cope with stiff Nomads’ bowling and tight fielding who skittled them out for a paltry 163. Tony Suji top scored for the side with 44 and was supported by David Maina with 38. Obado was one of the Chiefs’ main destroyer with three wickets for 29 and was supported by team skipper, Odoyo (3-14) and Kewal Patel 3-28.

Needing 63 to win in 28 overs, the Nomads opening batsman, David Obuya (28) steered the team to victory with two good partnerships. He shared an opening stand of 33 with Abdul Rehman (11) and a winning second wicket partnership of 29 with Rakep Patel (15). The Nomads only needed 51 balls to reach the target with nine wickets on hand.

At the Sir Ali Muslim Club the match between Southern Stars and Eastern Aces failed to take place as the Aces were unable to raise a side.
