Steven Smith - Will he go anywhere?

Cricinfo Profile:
"Steven Smith made a promising start to his state career in the 2007-08 KFC Twenty20 tournament, finishing the qualifying matches as the competition's equal leading wicket-taker with nine victims at the remarkable average of 5.33. His 4 for 15 in the dying stages against a Queensland side chasing 122 helped New South Wales to victory and earned him a Man-of-the-Match award. An allrounder who bowls legspin and bats in the top order, Smith also impressed with the bat, top scoring in the Blues' last match of the series with 33 from 26 balls. Earlier in the summer he made his FR Cup debut at the age of 18 but did not get a chance to bat. Smith was given his first New South Wales rookie contract in 2007-08 and was named in the Australia squad for the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia."

Needs to play a few more FRC matches and prove he's good enough in the Pura Cup, then the selectors will have a player on their hands. Great bowling figures in the Twenty20 Big Bash though...he's a player to watch.

Has a very weird bowling run up, but looks like he has an enormous amount of potential. Hits the ball very well too. You'd have to say he's on the verge of FC selection after his T20 dominance and 150* and 4/60 odd in the Second XI game. Reckon he'll be huge and can't wait to see how he does in the U-19 WC this year.

Interesting to see him coming through the NSW ranks considering he has MacGill, Hauritz and Casson to contend with. If he stays put he'll because their long term option. Might be tempting for him to go interstate like Krejza though. It looks like Queensland could do with a spinner.

He is a very good bat though, and has been averaging 60 in Grade this year. That definitely works for him.

Indeed. He should aim to make the team based on his batting alone IMO, with his bowling being a handy addition. The fact that we've played Casson and Hauritz as #7 batsmen in the past few seasons suggests there most certainly is a role for him in the team.

He will probably get a FRC game or 2 at some point either in the last couple of games this season or early next. His innings vs QLD in the KFC big bash and he looked the most likely of the NSW batsmen to get going but he got out trying to be a little to creative.

He's a UK passport holder I think, so would expect him to pick up a county gig this year or next. IIRC he's played a few second XI games for a county (can't remember which) already.

Talk is he has already jumped ahead of Casson as the first choice spinner in FC and likey to play ahead of Forrest as batting all rounder in ODs. Once he comes back from the Under 19 World he will probably share the all rounder spot with Lambert (FC) and Hendriques (OD). As the beleive is both those two will play better with another all rounder in the side. Main reason why they tired O'Keefe in ODs.

He'll win a Bronze Medal in the High Jump at the 1996 Olympic Games, I reckon.
