Official Under 19 World Cup thread

JASON

Cricketer Of The Year
Under 19 World Cup set to start in 4 weeks time in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.
Interestingly Dav Whatmore is coaching Indian under 19 team....most highest profile coach for an Under 19 team one suspects...
I think Australia India Pakistan will be the usual strong sides ...any others will be surprise packages...I hope SL do well and I know Aravinda De Silva is the batting coach.
Anyway any comments...

I wonder if Sky NZ will show the U-19 on Sky ....

It would be great to see some coverage of the U19 World Cup.

I really enjoyed watching the New Zealand U19 team take on the NZ Masters team in the Twenty20 game a few weeks ago.

It's great to see these young guys perform and a good idea of the talent coming through.

NZ has a couple of brilliant quicks -Southey was one and there was another who was good ...trying to remember ...

Trent Boult the left armer? Opening bowler....

He is pretty impressive. Won a competition as quickest school boy bowler last year I think.

Yes that's the guy and they also had a couple of Indian allrounders who were pretty good as well. Dipak Patel is their coach so, they will be well prepared.

New Zealand have a few very good U19 players, Southee being perhaps the best. Corey Anderson, Hamish Bennett and Kane Williamson all have FC experience and are promising youngsters. They also looked to have a couple of handy spinners whose names I can't remember, but they'll be receiving some top coaching from Dipak Patel.

Will be funny when NZ crash out of first round again and get owned by the likes of Nepal in Plate comp. Pretty sure Southee is too old for Under 19s now.

I'd be very surprised if the winner is not one out of Australia, India and Pakistan.

I think India have a pretty strong team and coached by Dav Whatmore they will feel they can go one better than in 2006.

We shouldn't. Not with Southee, Williamson and Anderson. Then there is Trent Boult, Greg Morgan, George Worker who have all played FC and that Daniel Vettori esque spinner.

Our batting looks dodgy though bar Williamson and Anderson. Morgan, strangely has been quite good with the bat in FC cricket despite being a bowler. I expect our openers to get owned though, Michael Bracewell (keeper batsman) and the subcontinent bloke, Rasel or Ravi or something, don't look particularly flash as openers.

Zimbabwe have never been easy beats at this level even with their player exdous, so it should be interesting. NZ does look better prepared then usually and have a few more guys playing domestic cricket, then what they have had in the past Youth WC. Should be an interesting group with Pakistan the clear favorites to take top spot.

Yeah really, really looking forward to this. I wish Fox were showing our games...would get a fair amount of interest I imagine. I'm predicting another Indian or Pakistani win. They always have the best kids, as they should.

But I can't wait to see how Steve Smith and Phil Hughes go.

I am interested to see how Namibia cope with the big guns consideri9ng they only just edged Kenya out in the final of the qualifiers for this comp:mellow:

I believe this is our best ever U-19 side. Bowling has always been our strong suit but this time it will be batsman who will catch the headlines.

Watch out for Umer Akmal (brother of Kamran), he's nailing run a ball 200's in first class and the lad is just 16.

Star Cricket will be covering the tournament. Really looking forwards to it. India to win imo. I am glad that Whatmore is getting acquainted with the young guys. It not only helps the young players immensely, such allignments form rapports which can last for years. A fair few of India under-19 players go on to play for India and hopefully we will see some from the class of 2008 as well. Hoping that Whatmore will keep himself associated with Indian cricket and goes on to coach the senior side in the future as well. If I were to predict a time, it would be after the 2011 world cup imo.

The West Indies under 19 team has some outstanding individuals but are yet to perform as a team (they played in the KFC cup and were bowled out for 18 by Pedro Collins deadly inswingers).

Individuals to look out for:

Adrian Barath (Trinidad & Tobago) - Brian Lara's protege. He is a right handed opening batsman with 2 FC centuries and an average of over 50. He is 17 years old. Lara took him to England during our tour there in May. He is our most promising batting prospect by some distance.

Daren Bravo (Trinidad & Tobago) - Dwayne's 18 year old brother. He has scored heavily in youth and club cricket but is yet to transform that to FC cricket. He is an extremely attractive left handed middle order batsman who has based his technique on a young Brian Lara. Like his brother he is a superb athlete in the field and a useful medium pacer.

Veerasammy Permaul(Guyana) - 18 year old left arm spinner who has already tasted success in FC and List A cricket. He turns the ball a fair amount, flights the ball and has good control. He completely dominated the under 19 tournament 2 years in a row and is a regular in the Guyana senior team.

Jason Dawes (Jamaica) - 18 year old right arm fast bowler who is the fastest bowler to emerge from West Indies under 19 cricket since Jermaine Lawson (only this guy bowls:laugh: ). He emerged from the KFC cup with a lot of cricket after giving Barbados the hurry up even though they were only chasing 18 runs. He is not the tallest, but he is an athlete and I will be very surprised if there is anyone as quick as him in the tournament.
