One Test Wonders

FFS, still another 3 months. :wallbash:

Think sp713 can put Umar Gul back in his about then too hactually.

I've flirted several times with turning sigs off again in recent times because of whichever damn nuscience put that bet on with you. Is only worth not doing because of the Dale Brumbys and Zac Gelmans of this World.
Yeah the only reason I never turned them off ages ago is because of Brumby's, also have to keep an eye on them obviously.

Didn't spot it was English TBH.

Umm, how about Nick Cook?
I considered him, but he did have several decent performances. Obviously the first test in Pakistan 1983/84 was extraordinary, but he also did well at home to NZ the previous summer.

As Sam said, Hemmings isn't a bad option.

The other guy who just sprang to my mind was much more recent though. And his one decent return probably had much more impact than Eddie cleaning up the NZ lower order, even though he only took 4 in the innings.

How about Shaun Udal as the "English One test Wonder" spinner?

Weren't most of his wickets tailenders on the slog? Although that one innings accounts for half of his test wickets, so I suppose he's got as fair a shout as anyone.
The fact that the first was Tendulkar, caught at short-leg from one that turned and bounced, sort of mitigates that.

Fair enough, I can't remember the delivery itself.

Although if just dismissing Sachin is grounds for inclusion we may as well include Mick Vaughan as a specialist spinner. I still remember that one he got to turn and clip the top of off.

At a stretch you could put Richard Illingworth in as a spinner, he took a wicket with his first ball in Test Cricket but achieved little else, in fact he almost disappeared for 4 years until all other spinners developed dropsy.

He couldn't go on to run through the lower-order tho. :p

And unlike in Udal's case, there was no-one else. If Udal hadn't swiped that tail out, someone else would have. No-one could at Trent Bridge in 2002.

I believe Udal is coming out of his short-lived retirement this summer. Given the lack of any sort of quality spinner beyond Panesar he might find himself back in the team if an injury should overcome Monty.

Nev baby you made a mistake, it doesn't make you a lesser person. However, this pointless facile denial does.
I would suggest the same of your facile insistence on reciprocation. I have always been more than happy to admit that I am wrong when I am wrong, but I am not going to admit that I am wrong when I am right.

I am sure that you will have an opportunity to get your own back in due course. For now, though, you really should stop bludgeoning this dead stallion.

You claimed you were clearly digressing and then decided he fitted having taken a wicket with his first ball - a fact you didn't mention because of course every one knows it.
If you don't even know if you were digressing or not there's not much hope. Oh yes, you spelt his name incorrectly, a fact you will no doubt be able to explain without it being an error.:)

I was.

Not a difficult decision to make, although I made it with my first, digressive post, not after it.

a fact you didn't mention because of course every one knows it.
You're right on the money, Ms Thompson. So what's your problem?

If you don't even know if you were digressing or not there's not much hope.
Ah, you've just fallen off the money. Emphatically.

Oh yes, you spelt his name incorrectly, a fact you will no doubt be able to explain without it being an error.:)
There we are! There's your reciprocatory error!

Now everyone can see that you made two errors instead of one.....shame.:-O

A one-off Test wonder performance that hasn't been mentioned - Jason Gillespie 201*

Shane Watson has been a three-Test flop. But Australia overcame the Watson handicap to win all three. Two of them thanks to Stuart MacGill who got Watson those two caps as well.

As for an England spinner. What about Nick Cook?
