Is India under represented at the level ICC officialdom?

Just a coincidental thing I noticed glancing through ICC officials list...

Emirates Elite Panel Umpires

Aleem Dar
Asad Rauf
Mark Benson
Brent Bowden
Steve Bucknor
Billy Doctrove
Darrell Hair
Daryl Harper
Rudi Koertzen
Simon Taufel

Emirates Elite Panel Referees
Chris Broad
Jeff Crowe
Alan Hurst
Ranjan Madugalle
Roshan Mahanama
Mike Procter
Javagal Srinath

Every major Test playing country has 2 reps ie either 2 umpires or 1 Umpire and 1 referee or 2 referees(as in the case of Sri Lanka) ...India looks grossly under represented with only Javagal Srinath being the sole representative as Match referee while Australia appears grossly over represented with 3 umpires and 1 referee (making it 4 officials) ....Thought it was worth highlighting ...any thoughts...

Their umpires are crap?
Yes, that is pretty much it. We pay very little attention to developing umpires and it is fair enough (though a sad indictment at how cricket is run in India) that there are none in the ICC elite panel right now.

perhaps, so are Sri Lankan umps...so we have 2 referees ...but only 1 Indian match referee..
If you look at the match referees most are former players, so it just a sign that most ex players in India just go straight into the media and don't worry about looking at other cricketing options like being match referee. It is nothing new that Sri Lanka and India haven't produced many quality umpires worthy of being on the elite panel. There is hardly any that are good enough to umpire FC matches to be honest.

The best Indian umpires are the worst. This coming from an Indian fan. In the last ODI series against Australia, Ameesh Sahiba and Suresh Shastri were worst.

I don't know about Referees. Srinath is doing an ok job.

If you look at any commitee in the Icc head of every operation is a non-asian .
Whether it be dave richardson, geldock, speed or any others.Only gavaskar is head of a mickey mouse commitee.
This is bizarre considering how much of revenue comes from asia.
Asian's need to get there fair representation at the ICC which will probably happen now as they have got united against others. No wonder the australians and english are unhappy that there control over the icc aling with sa is being eroded.

Yea, if there were good Indian umpires, we'd see more of them at the highest level. English and Australian domestic systems for umpires are first rate, where they train and groom the umpires - India sucks in this and we get what we pay for.

Not sure how many of you are actually aware of the poor condition Indian umpiring is in. Here's a piece from Sidharth Monga (who is a superb writer on the Indian domestic scene) which will throw some light for people unaware on the topic. Do read.

That was an interesting article - I forgot about Venkat. Well the BCCI and Indian media certainly don't encourage umpiring as a profession, given the scant ammount of respect they have for the current ones.

It's possible it goes on merit though, and not who raises the most.

Just seems strange that the largest Test playing nation is under represented at the officialdom level....while Australia appears over represented on the ICC gravy train...

What does it mater when the ICC caves and rissoles an umpire coz India are unhappy with him (as India had every right to be btw)? I would have thought that Bucknor's fate after Sydney is probably suggestive of India not exactly lacking in influence compared with other countries.

Still, if what other posters are saying about umpire develiopment there is true, then the BCCI needs to have a really good look at doing somethign to improve the standard at domestic level there.

Just seems very strange that every other country only has 2 representatives in the combined Referee+ Umpire category - ie 2 Umpires or 1 umpire and 1 referee or 2 refeees.

Australia has 3 umpires + 1 referee - making it the most over represented country at ICC officials level , while India only has 1 referee....Now I can understand the discussion re Umpires being not upto standard in India , but why are there not 2 match referees from India ...and why is there even any match referees from Australia, when already they have 3 umpires...

Seems a bit of haphazard allocation as I see it...
